Harley-Davidson and Bonhams hosted a unique auction in the US this past May, with proceeds from the sale donated to United Way Worldwide’s COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund. Open to US residents only, the one-lot auction was for a Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycle. Being #500 of the 500 ‘First Strike’ launch editions produced, the LiveWire was already a special unit, but individualised touches added by Harley-Davidson made it a one-off. Bespoke features included a unique paint scheme and graphics package created in-house by the Harley-Davidson styling and design team. The auctioned bike also featured a full array of carbon fibre H-D Genuine Parts and Accessories, including carbon fibre Speed Screen Blade, Tail Section Cowl and Tank Trim. This year’s Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island has been officially cancelled. Citing “logistical and operational issues” relating to the coronavirus pandemic, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) and Dorna jointly announced the cancellation on 27 May. The cancellation is the first in the Australian GP’s 31-year history. No Australian MotoGP round this year is an obvious blow to MotoGP fans but will have a greater impact on the communities and businesses that rely on those fans coming to the island and Bass Coast Shire. The GP is the largest sporting event in regional Victoria and injects an estimated $50 million annually into the state economy. After an absence of almost 80 years, Brough Superior motorcycles are officially back in Australia, following the appointment of a local distributor for the revived English motorcycle brand. ‘Brough Superior Australia’ signed on as official importer and distributor for Australia and New Zealand almost twelve months ago, with an announcement confirming the appointment and that the order books were open made this past May. After weeks of rumours, Jack Miller’s signing with the Ducati Team for 2021 in MotoGP was confirmed on 27 May by Ducati Corse. The deal will make Miller the first Australian with a factory ride in MotoGP since Casey Stoner in 2012 and the third Aussie – after Stoner and Troy Bayliss – to ride for the Ducati Team in MotoGP. Last December, Triumph announced a partnership with EON Productions that would see Triumph motorcycles used in the next James Bond film, No Time to Die. The 25th film in the 007 franchise features a bit of Triumph, specifically the Scrambler 1200 and Tiger 900, in action sequences. Despite only one round of the 2020 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship being completed, Kawasaki Racing Team (KRT) have re-signed Alex Lowes for the 2021 season. Lowes, who came to KRT this year after four seasons with Yamaha’s factory WSBK team, made an impressive debut on the KRT ZX-10RR back in February. At the opening round of the 2020 WSBK Championship at Phillip Island, Lowes scored a podium and his second ever race win. For the past two years, I’ve been rocking the same pair of gloves, both for the track and the road. There’s a reason for that and it’s nothing to do with being slack or tight-fisted. I’ve had plenty of gloves in the past but have always struggled to find a pair that fit comfortably and, of course, properly.
