After what seems like an interminable wait, Yamaha’s Tenere 700 is finally on its way. Any doubts over the ability of Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Ducati) to replicate his form from the pre-season tests were dispelled when he topped the timesheets in Free Practice 2 and 3 after Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) had been fastest in Free Practice 1. Rea’s team mate Leon Haslam was also quick, as was Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) in his first proper hitout with the S 1000 RR. Unlike last year at Phillip Island, conditions were dry and mild on the opening days, continuing into Saturday’s Superpole session where Rea recorded a rare Superpole win, his 1m29.413s lap setting a new circuit record and putting him on pole ahead of Haslam and Bautista. Ducati and Honda rev limits were adjusted ahead of this round, with the Panigale V4 R reduced by 250rpm to 16,100 and the CBR1000RR limit increased by 500rpm to 15,050. Cold conditions at Assen got worse on Saturday, then ridiculous when a snowstorm hit the circuit as riders were readying for Race 1. Before that drama, Bautista had claimed pole ahead of van der Mark at his home track and Reiterberger. A real mixed bag in Free Practice at Misano saw Rea top the first session and van der Mark the second. When the rain came down for FP3, it was Baz who took advantage as several riders chose not to go out. In a dry and warm Superpole session, Rea grabbed the Number 1 grid position ahead of an impressive Cortese, with Sykes completing the front row. Bautista qualified fifth, between Lowes and Haslam, on the second row. The rain returned before Race 1, leading to a delayed start, which was barely two laps old before the red flags came out as the rain intensified. The only dog in Australia with a ministerial declaration to legally ride on a road bike, Bundy has travelled the length and breadth of Australia and is also the world’s fastest motorcycling dog, having reached 283km/h on Tex’s Hayabusa at Sydney Motorsport Park. Yamaha’s hyper-naked MT-10 has scored a minor update for 2019 and it’s now available in ‘Ice Fluo’; a new colour for the year which combines a cool matte-white finish and bright orange wheels. The Yamaha Blue and Tech Black colour choices remain for 2019. Colour change aside, the good news for fans of one of Yamaha’s best modern motorcycles is that the MT-10 loses none of its aggressive styling for the new model year. Rea has been the man to beat at Buriram in the past, and that’s exactly what Bautista did! In typical Thai heat and humidity, the Spaniard topped all three Free Practice sessions, then claimed Superpole with a new circuit record lap of 1m31.912s. In 35-degree heat, Race 1 started with Bautista getting a flying start from Rea, van der Mark bolting from tenth on the grid to fifth and Sykes benefitting from off-track excursions by Cortese and Melandri – all on the opening lap. A collision between Rea and Bautista on Lap 3 almost ended the race for both riders, allowing Lowes to briefly take second before Bautista counterpunched. To celebrate their position as engine supplier to the Moto2 World Championship this year, Triumph Motorcycles have announced a new, limited-edition version of their Daytona sportsbike. The ‘Daytona Moto2 765 Limited Edition’ is being described as the “ultimate edition” of the company’s supersport triple, with the highest ever power and torque ever offered in a Triumph triple, thanks to technology developed from the Moto2 race engine programme. As well as a highly-developed engine and chassis, the limited-edition Daytona will carry a high degree of rider assistance technology and other high-specification finishes. While the full calendar for the 2020 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship is still to be revealed, Australia is locked in and will once again host next year’s season opener. Scheduled for 28 February to 1 March (subject to FIM ratification), the Yamaha Finance Australian WSBK round will be the 30th to be held at the Phillip Island circuit – a feat no other track on the calendar past or present has achieved.
