TRACK-FOCUSSED ENGINE While the capacity and many of the internals remain unchanged, the 998cc inline four now delivers more low and midrange torque, while a lighter crank, revised camshafts, larger exhaust valves and shorter lighter pistons mean the engine revs faster and also delivers improved handling. Larger water jackets improve engine cooling. TITANIUM EXHAUST Lightweight titanium exhaust headers last longer and contribute to mass centralisation. REVISED FRAME New geometry for the 2016 model sees the aluminium twin-spar frame’s steering head moved closer to the rider and the swingarm lengthened to put more weight over the front end for greater corner stability. Ducati has celebrated a successful 2015 with worldwide annual sales exceeding 50,000 units for the first time in the Italian company’s history. The 50,000 mark was reached on 10 November, setting an all-time sales record, and an increase of almost 10,000 sales on the same period in 2014. That’s the question Ducati’s owners, the Castiglioni brothers, were faced with in 1994 when Ayrton Senna, a friend and Ducati customer, was killed at the San Marino F1 Grand Prix at Imola. Only a few weeks prior, Senna had called in to Ducati’s Borgo Panigale factory to discuss a special edition 916 with the brothers. All profits from the special edition were to be donated to the ‘Instituto Ayrton Senna’; a charitable organisation supporting disadvantaged children in Senna’s native Brazil. Along with a small group of other motorcycling journos and invited guests, JUST BIKES attended the launch of the 2016 model Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R at Wakefield Park in late November. On paper, the new model promised a lot, and at the briefing ahead of our track time on the new ‘10’, we were presented with details on the dizzying array of technologies, some making their Kawasaki debut, that have gone into the latest version. Attending the Australian launch was Kawasaki’s Yoshimoto Matsuda, development leader for the MY16 Ninja ZX-10R, who went into the new model’s tech in more detail.
