The funeral rites that were afforded to the most senior German military commanders were often lavish affairs that involved attendance by the highest-ranking officers, political leaders, parades, bands, and grand floral tributes. This was certainly the case during the period of Imperial German rule, and it extended into the time of the Third Reich. Sometimes, ‘lesser’ military figures, such as famous fighter pilots etc., might expect something of a showpiece funeral. Such things were considered the norm. However, when two lowly NCO fliers were killed in an accident in Umbria during 1943, their send-off was what can only be described as a truly extraordinary affair for men of such rank.
