The word ‘iconic’ is possibly one of the most overused words in the English language, often being lazily applied to describe people, places, films, aircraft, technology etc. that are far from iconic - quite apart from the fact that its overuse dilutes the word’s impact. In terms of the application of this adjective to the Third Reich period, then care must surely be exercised. After all, with the word meaning something that is revered, or embodying essential characteristics of an era, group etc., then should such superlatives ever be used in connection with Third Reich Germany?
