Shifting Perspectives When we see ourselves in the mirror, we look more or less the same as the day before; yet over time, we change dramatically. Using App Shortcuts 3D Touch has been around for a while now, but thanks to iOS 10, you can access more app features than before with Quick Actions when you firmly press app icons. For instance, the News app displays a widget with top stories as well as a panel of your favorite news sources. Other apps with useful Quick Actions include Mail, with shortcuts to things like your VIP mailbox or search bar; Phone, which shows recent callers and recent voicemail; or Reminders, which shows current items and your most frequently used lists. Using Emoji Suggestions Emojis are the standard for expressing emotion in text, and Apple has baked those little icons into the Messages app like never before. If you’re composing a message and have Predictive Text enabled, you’ll see emoji suggestions as you type. And here's an important distinction : if you select the emoji after typing the word, the emoji will replace the word; if you add a space after the word and then tap the emoji, the emoji is added after it. You can also replace words after composing your message by tapping the emoji icon on the keyboard. Any keywords with emojis will light up orange. Tap each word to replace it. Tailoring Your Story Feed You can now mark stories you dislike as well as ones you like in the News app, making it easier to tailor which content appears in the For You section of the app. To do this, first navigate to a story. You’ll see a bar on the bottom of your screen with icons representing four options: Share, Dislike, Like, and Bookmark. If you don’t like the story, tap the icon displaying a heart with a slash through it. The News app will avoid displaying similar stories in the future. Turn Off Raise to Wake While iOS 10 brought a ton of great new features to your iPhone and iPad, the update also introduced some potential battery life problems. If your battery is draining faster now that you have iOS 10 installed, the first thing you’ll want to do is turn off Raise to Wake, a feature that senses when you’ve picked up your iPhone and lights up the Home screen in response. This feature is turned on by default, which can drain your battery fast if you pick up your iPhone a lot or walk with it swinging in your hand. Using Raise to Wake The first thing you’ll likely notice when handling your locked phone is Raise to Wake, which senses when you’ve picked up your device and lights up in response. This allows you to easily check notifications and change the current song you’re listening to without unlocking your phone. However, some users don’t like this new feature, as it contributes to battery drain. If you don’t like Raise to Wake, you can disable it by going to Settings > Display & Brightness and toggling off Raise to Wake. Now your phone will no longer illuminate when you pick it up. Suggested Destinations When you launch the Maps app, as usual you’ll see your location on a map, as well as a card with a search bar at the top of it. When you tap on the search bar, you’ll see a list of suggested locations. If you scroll through the locations, you’ll find places you’ve recently navigated to as well as destinations based on your Calendar events, a cool addition that not even Google Maps has integrated. Unsubscribing to Newsletters You’re likely subscribed to tons of newsletters you don’t have the time to read regularly. Thankfully, Apple has made it really easy to tidy up your inbox. Now when you receive an email from a mass mailing list, you’ll see a little grey box at the top of the screen with blue text reading Unsubscribe. Delete Built-In Apps A nearly decade-long pet peeve of iPhone users has been the inability to delete Apple’s stock apps—but now you can! Let’s say you find an app you prefer to Apple’s Calendar or Reminders app. You can delete the stock versions the way you would any other app: press and hold on the app until all the icons begin jiggling, then tap the X in the upper right corner of the app you wish to delete. Using Facial Recognition Under the Albums tab in the Photos app, you’ll find an album titled People, a powerful new feature that recognizes facial features in photos. Tap a person to open all photos of them and then add their name by tapping Add Name at the top of the page. From the main People folder, you can also Favorite or Hide specific people. Just tap Select in the upper right corner, tap on a person, and then select either Select or Hide.You may also notice several photos of the same person appearing as separate people. Similar to the way that you can send GIFs and stickers in the updated Messages app, you can also send clips of the music you’ve recently played in Apple Music. To share recently played songs from Apple Music in a message, simply open a conversation thread in the Messages app and then tap the arrow to the left of the text box. Then tap the App Store icon. Quickly Open and Close Tabs The changes to Safari with iOS 10 are subtle and therefore easily missed at first. One of these hidden features is the ability to quickly open and close tabs, which saves you time while browsing the web. To do this, simply press and hold on the Tabs icon (which looks like two squares overlapping one another). When you press and hold on the icon, two options will pop up: New Tab and Close Tabs. I used to devote a lot of time and energy to my creativity. In March of 2015, Apple launched ResearchKit, an open-source software framework created specifically for the advancement of medical research. The tool ultimately helps researchers gather high-volume quality data in a cost-effective way— directly from patients using their iPhones.
