Interweave Knits Winter 2020

Dear Reader, It’s been quite the year. So much has changed since last year’s winter issue of Interweave Knits that all the happenings would be hard to summarize in this modest message. I’ll simply say that I’ve been in a reflective mood lately, and I look forward to seeing how the year 2020 unfolds. I’m hoping for positive changes, fun challenges, and maybe just a bit more relaxation, if I can swing it. Mostly, I’m hoping to do things differently in 2020. Adjustments can take a while in this business, given that we work so far out on the calendar, but I’m optimistic we’ll see a general shift in a new direction. One small change we made in this issue was to combine the projects into one large project story.…

There are advantages to working stranded knitting in the round: The right side of the work is always facing you, so it’s easy to see the patterning (and make sure that it’s correct), and you don’t have to purl while managing two yarns. However, one problem with working in the round is the jog in the pattern that occurs where the beginning and end of the round meets. WHAT CAUSES THE JOG? Short-rows are one of the most useful skills any knitter could have to ensure a neatly fitted sleeve or neckline, but many knitters still struggle to obtain a tidy turn. The Easy No-Wrap Short-Row method is my personal favorite and the technique I use exclusively for all of my design work. The turns make use of slipped stitches rather than wrapping and turning, then the slipped stitches are worked together with the stitch they’re positioned under to close the gaps. These short-rows are very clean looking, and you won’t need to rely on stitch markers to find the turns. All of these features create a subtle turn that is perfect for stockinette stitch.
