AUSTIN ROBERTSON is one of those prolific achievers that occasionally emerge from the West. Three years ago, he was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame. In a footy career spanning 1962-74, Robertson kicked a record 1,211 goals for Subiaco, including a season in which he booted 168. In one season for South Melbourne, the team his dad, Austin Sr, played for, Robertson kicked 60 goals in 18 games before returning west.
Toward the end of his football career, he worked as a journalist. So well-connected was he, and so accustomed to mixing with the elite in several sports, he segued effortlessly into the management of sportspeople. In fact, he was the first sports manager most of us, certainly in Australia, can remember.
