The withdrawal of Ben Stokes from England’s Ashes squad is, on the face of it, their biggest problem as they prepare to take on the Aussies in Australia, the place hostility calls home. Stokes would have provided a much-needed remedial dose of Factor X. As he proved during that last harrowing Ashes tour, he’s an indomitable spirit.
But the biggest loss is not merely his fighting presence. (Note: this is not a wry, sly or insensitive reference to his recent troubles. Sigh.) Stokes emboldens an English side that might, for this tour, be packing residual self-doubt.
