All the lost homes – and we still don’t know how many – of the people in southern Queensland and northern NSW (the Northern Rivers, Hunter Valley, Sydney, and all the other pockets under water along our east coast) is heartbreaking. But the human response has been extraordinary. Losing a home with all your possessions in it must be the most confusing, painful experience. For those of us who work on homes magazines, where we spend all our time thinking about creating dream spaces and buildings, and obsessing over details, fixtures, furniture and materials, the idea is terrifying. The rise of public spaces – specifically stores, hotels, bars and restaurants – as the vanguard of new and exciting residential design ideas has never been stronger. Why are these public spaces so inspiring for our homes? It’s because all the fresh ideas (for shapes, colours and materials) appear there first. fresh start Healthy Abode has a new address in northern NSW Clean-living advocates Lee-Anne and Lee Stevens help clients to build homes that are as eco- and people-friendly as possible. When they found this property in the hills behind Byron Bay, they realised it could be both their home and a model of detoxifying design. One of their most basic but important principles is good ventilation, which is easy to achieve here by throwing open the doors and windows, and elsewhere with ceiling fans or air purifiers. Set behind paparazzi-deflecting hedges in an exclusive Hollywood enclave that Elizabeth Taylor once called home, this modern Spanish villa is a blockbuster of a rebuild. Perched in the Hollywood Hills along a glamorous and highly sought-after strip called the Bird Streets (a cluster including Nightingale and Robin), the 1930s-era property was in poor shape when celebrity interior designers Cortney and Robert Novogratz purchased it in 2019. Setting up a design business takes time – and the right portfolio. When you’ve been involved in more than 150 home projects of various shapes and sizes, a sense of ‘seen it all’ can set in. Lisa and Steve Booth have had an appreciation for the land since they were children. It’s hard to believe that Mariam Abdelkarim is a self-taught interior stylist, and that she didn’t fully explore her passion for design until the launch of her Inventory Interior Instagram account in 2019. The owners of this house in Melbourne’s inner south bought the handsome Spanish-mission property in 2019 and embarked on a Spanish mission of their own.
