Choosing the homes for each issue is one of my favourite parts of this job, and what I find endlessly fascinating is how unique each and every one is. ‘Split’ desk DESIGNER: Rhys Cooper Perfecting the kiln temperature has a lot to do with the success of Rhys’s ‘Split’ desk. Take a closer look and you’ll notice that the black surface is Corian, which had its own set of challenges attached to it. “Working with a material I’m unfamiliar with is always a steep learning curve,” says Rhys, who is from New South Wales and now based in Adelaide. “The Corian is heated in a kiln, and once it reaches the specified temperature, it’s removed and slumped over a mould.” Melding the man-made material (the desk is also available in white) with the timber elements – all crafted by hand – gives ‘Split’ its sculptural look, but Rhys also works in practical smarts: “It incorporates cable management, book display…

Interior stylist Mette Helena Rasmussen advises her clients about decorating choices for a living. When it came to the kitchen update in her Copenhagen apartment, though, “the entire project was about to get stuck because of my indecision. I wasn’t sure if I wanted an all-white kitchen or a black and more daring look,” says Mette Helena. “I chose classic white and decided to use paint to try the other look.” With this first scheme, the walls were painted a white shade with a cool blue tone. If you’re renovating for resale, it’s wise to keep things fairly neutral.Tile choice has a dramatic impact on a bathroom, not only aesthetically but in terms of defining the space and maximising its size. Remember the days when each room in the house had four walls and a couple of doors? With the trend towards open-plan living, we’re now challenged to define our spaces in different, more creative ways. Of course, walls are the easiest and the simplest solution to mark out a space – even better, they hold up the roof – but they’re also enclosing, restricting flow and taking away that open feel we love so much.
