This was a house that communicated so much about its owners, just through the design and materials. No Chintz owner Chrissie Jeffery loves the rich, new decorative fabrics and wallpapers coming out of the UK and sees a return to more ornate window dressings. “It started in England, with young designers who’ve fallen in love with pattern,” she says. “There are some crazy rosy wallpapers — all very Arts and Crafts. “Then, last year, interior designer Ben Pentreath reinvigorated the classic wallpapers and fabrics of William Morris. 1 THE CABIN STUDIO (1980) This is a work from Ken’s very first exhibition in 1980, a complex painting of the view from his Sydney studio. At $1500, it was the most expensive piece in that show and did not sell. A couple of days later, Aaron Kaplan, one of two directors of local culture magazine Billy Blue, called and offered Ken $1000 for the work. Reluctantly, he sold the painting at the reduced price. Describe the location of your home It’s in Berrima, a special part of the Southern Highlands. We’re out of the day-to-day busyness of Bowral, but on weekends we still get a nice amount of tourists visiting. Berrima has that old-town charm, and we love that the kids can walk to school, ride their bikes around the streets and get themselves to the local ice-cream shop. Did some design plans or items change during the build, perhaps due to lack of space or budget? “Most people will raise and lower their blind once or twice a day, so if you want to manually operate it, you’ll need access,” explains Wynstan’s Amelia Taylor. “If items obstruct the window (or you prefer not to do it yourself), consider automating it.” Automation is very affordable for window treatments — prices have dropped over the past decade as the technology has become more accessible. Amber Creswell Bell is an art curator, a writer of books on the arts, a speaker and an enthusiastic creative hustler.
