Anyone who knows me knows that I usually have a story. I come from a family of storytellers, I work in storytelling and I’m never happier than when I’m holding court over dinner and drinks with some kind of madcap experience. My 2017 was a rich seam of material, and I’m hoping 2018 will be full of life-enriching moments to share with you – starting with a new home. Just before the end of the year, I purchased a new home. After I negotiated a speedy settlement and worked out where the Christmas tree would go, I quickly turned my attention to the kitchen and bathroom that needed an update. As we print this magazine, I’m reworking the floorplan between reading proofs (don’t tell my boss… it’s research, I swear).…

Neon Poodle ‘Florence’ light DESIGNER: Sammy Gibson After searching high and low for a neon light for her daughter’s bedroom, designer Sammy decided to take matters into her own hands. “What child doesn’t want their name in lights? We decided to source a safe product and make it ourselves,” she says. “Our designs just grew from there!” Each Neon Poodle light is handmade and tested to Australian standards. “We use a flexible LED neon product with an acrylic back,” says Sammy. “And all our signs come with a dimmer, which is perfect for bedrooms.” The bulbs will last for around 50,000 hours – so if the light was on for 24 hours a day, that would equal about five to six years of use. 1. The skylights We need lots of skylights! And, remember – if the roof’s coming off anyway, it wouldn’t cost that much more to put them in. I’d suggest three skylights at the back of the house and, assuming Anouchka can get the planning permission, two or three more at the front. There is precedent in her street so hopefully that wouldn’t be a problem. Even if they can only open a crack, it would be fantastic for cross-ventilation, which is currently lacking. They would also spill light down into the rest of the house and make up for the way the original windows have been so brutally removed.
