You’ve heard all the rules about designing a small space – use light colours, avoid clutter, place your furniture close to the walls. But when it comes to choosing furniture and storage pieces, there is one overarching idea to keep in mind – versatility. If your key living zones are modest, then every piece has to justify its worth with maximum flexibilty. Different rooms call for different functions, and it’s worth thinking (hard) about how you really use each room, so you can plan a layout that fits with your lifestyle. All floors and the kitchen are replaced. Late 2016 A fresh coat of paint to the exterior and front fence gives a revamped presence. 2017 June After some hard saving, the couple are now ready to overhaul the bathroom. August The landscaping and pool refresh are in full focus. Decking is added to the home’s side passage and a new glass pool fence drastically improves the sense of space in the small but well-appointed yard. 2008-16 July 2008 Aniket and Blanca move into the house. April 2010 Blanca gives birth to twins Mia and Niam. May 2014 Aniket and Blanca realise they need a bigger home and start planning for their renovation. April 2016 Construction begins. The basement is dug out to create an entry and a top floor is added. 2017 February Construction is finished, but there are still a few jobs to do. The family move back in regardless and details such as building the floor-to-ceiling bookcases and benches around the dining table are worked on. “Once upon a time, this street was pretty unpopular. The houses all back onto Cooks River and for a long time it was a dirty, smelly dumping ground infested with mosquitos. Then, the great clean-up happened – mangroves were replanted and the river banks landscaped. There’s now a footpath and bikeway and the 10 streets that are riverfront are among the most saleable. The aqueduct is a huge part of local history here. People who have lived around here for decades remember when local kids used to run across it! It doesn’t affect the value of the overlooking properties, but the aqueduct does put a limit on the buyer pool because it polarises opinion – some will think it’s magnificent, while others will regard it as an eyesore. The deal: Can shutters be the right choice for a bedroom? The pros: Shutters offer a beautiful, clean look and are a quick and easy way to control light and privacy. Also, most are easy to keep clean. The cons: Remember, they aren’t 100% blockout. And if you want to get the most of a view from a bedroom window, you’ll need to open them out, which requires space around them. Plus, as permanent fixtures, shutters block window details such as stained glass. The verdict: Nay! Roman blinds or full-length curtains are a better option – they are easier to open up for admiring your view. They’re still big on style, but they give you more flexibility and control over the light. You can always add blockouts for total darkness, too.…

Tell us about your creative journey? I was lucky to have been immersed in a creative environment from day one. I grew up in New Zealand where my nanna was a tailoress and she taught my mother, who taught me and my sisters, to sew, knit and crochet. Disheartened by the ongoing maintenance issues of their charming 1970s home, which had originally enticed them with treetop views and a remote location, Sara Hingle and her husband Mick decided to look for something quite the opposite. When a family of four lives in a city as heavily populated as New York, how do they find a nice house, in a good location, with enough space to allow them to breathe, all at the same time? Any average family might struggle, but the Shahanes are anything but average. Blanca is a jewellery designer and her husband Aniket an architect.
