It’s funny how there’s such a big lead up to December 25 that we forget that the rest of the month is a good time to reflect on the year that was. ‘Loop’ shelving system DESIGNER: Daniel Tucker What’s in a name? Sometimes, product names can tend towards the obscure, but Daniel was keen to avoid this route with his ‘Loop’ shelves. So what inspired his choice? “Nothing too tricky,” says Daniel. “When we were prototyping the shelves, we kept referring to the timber uprights as loops.” These timber uprights form the frame, while steel shelves complete the piece. “The shelves are laser cut, folded in steel and then they’re powder-coated,” says Daniel. “The timber frames are made from American oak, mitred and stained black.” Working from JamFactory in Adelaide, Daniel no doubt finds much inspiration from other designers working around him, but this piece draws on ideas from a little further afield. “I drew some influence from German designer Dieter Rams’s…

THE ORIGINAL Carl Hansen & Søn ‘CH 25’ lounge chair by Hans J. Wegner The form: A timber lounge chair with flat ‘paddle’ arms and a seat and back of woven, twisted paper cord. What makes it special: Purportedly one of the first four designs created by master craftsman and Danish design legend, Hans J. Wegner when he first began working for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949, the ‘CH25’ has become a much sought-after mid-century classic and has been in continuous production for 66 years. The intricately woven seat and back showcases the full scope and beauty of Danish paper cord weaving when used as upholstery. The deal: I have two ovens: a pyrolytic oven and a steam oven. The pros: I can use a combination of functions at the same time. I use the pyrolytic oven for grilling and for developing flavour – to get really crispy skin on roast chicken or grilling bacon. Anything with fat is cooked in this oven because it cleans itself! With the steam oven, I can be steaming my first course at a low temperature, for example, steaming fish at 50°C, then switch it up to full steam for the vegies. They had daughter Amber soon afterwards and are planning to add to the family soon.
