My family home was full of colour. Dianne Bradley colour-coordinates her world within an inch of its life and she was always trying new, increasingly bold combinations. Craft is obviously a very big part of your life. Was this always the case? Yes, I remember crafting and loving it at a very young age, much like my daughter now. Used as panelling, timber creates a nice combination of clean modern lines but with warmth and a unique grain. Whether you use it as an extended bedhead (as seen here), recessed living area shelving or as a feature wall detail, the raw appeal of wood shines through. Even better, timber is a renewable resource and a material with a low-embodied energy (meaning the energy used to produce it is minimal). Is timber panelling a good fit in all houses? It works well in most homes, but it particularly well in old masonry houses, where its grain sits comfortably alongside the original building while maintaining a distinction between old and new. SMASHING PUMPKIN SOUP SERVES 4 PREPARATION TIME 10 minutes COOKING TIME 40 minutes 1 tbsp olive oil 1 brown onion, coarsely chopped 2 tsp ground cumin 1.2kg butternut pumpkin, peeled, seeded, coarsely chopped 1L (4 cups) good quality chicken or vegetable stock Dollop of natural yoghurt Ciabatta bread, extra virgin olive oil and dukkah for giant dukkah croutons (see recipe below), to serve 1. What was your childhood like? Dad was the youngest of 11, while our mum had six brothers and sisters and they were brought up quite modestly. I think because of that, they raised us similarly. We had to be creative with the toys we were given, or else make up the rest.
