1- Femmage

Referencing the Sally Smart artwork, which in turn references an earlier generation of feminist artists, the word ‘Femmage’ was coined by Miriam Schapiro to describe the use of traditional women’s techniques in contemporary art making. The exhibition, drawn from the SA collection includes works using combined or collaged materials, including paint, fabric, photography and found objects, with each work making reference to women and identity. There is a keen sense of social, political and personal enquiry in each of the works with exceptional pieces from Sarah Contos, Julie Fragar, Jacqui Stockdale, Caroline Rothwell, Annabelle Collett, Ali Gumillya Baker and many more.
