Welcome to the second issue of inside for 2019. It’s been a fast and furious race to the middle of the year with a plethora of events and exhibitions both here at home and overseas and, with half the year already over, there has hardly been time to breathe. Within inside 106 we present a variety of reviews, profiles and projects, and touch down in most of our Australian cities through our projects. To start the ball rolling there is a review of Melbourne Design Week (p18), which was again a huge success. Of all the events presented in Milan during Salone del Mobile week this year the most colourful and quirky was Missoni’s Home Sweet Home by artist Alessandra Roveda. The event was situated on via Solferino in the Brera district and the covered walkway that led through to the entrance did little to prepare the visitor for the extraordinary installation that was inside. Home Sweet Home was a woolly fantasy of ‘home’ that reinterpreted the idea of everyday life, with each and every item covered in multicoloured crochet. From the fixtures and fittings through to the furnishings and objects, ubiquitous items such as plates and food, even animals and a bicycle, were either covered or made from crochet. Only the walls and floors escaped the woolly treatment and the end result…

When it comes to an extraordinary lounge, Adam Goodrum’s eye for detail that supports scale and weight cannot be faulted. “Any object has to justify its existence and any space is defined by the objects in it,” says Goodrum, and to this end his large, luxurious, butter soft lounges, with just the right seat feel, are long enough to lie on and comfortable enough for an afternoon snooze. Similarly, his chairs, such as Volley (Tait) and Stitch (Capellini, Cult) blend the relaxed nature of our lifestyle with sculptural form and a considered execution of both materiality and colour. inside: How long have you lived here and what drew you to the property? Bianca Hung: I have been here for 12 years now. Since moving to Melbourne I have always lived in the inner north, so the location was a key driver. The existing character and Heritage features of the space, including the high ceilings, were things that stood out. Also the condition it was in when I purchased it meant I could renovate and add my personal touch. When did you produce this design? I planned to renovate as soon as I purchased the property, so was designing from day one. Named Sonar, the Spanish designer’s new collection intensifies a more three-dimensional aspect, yet still highlights the notoriously slender lines of the material. When speaking to architects, a key concept that continually underlines good workmanship and design is the attention to detail. What they mean by this is not the flourish and flounces, but the perfection of engineering, uninterrupted finishes, seamless cabinetry and invisible functionality that allow the whole to exist without chore. 1- Femmage Art Gallery of South Australia, SA 25 April – 1 September Referencing the Sally Smart artwork, which in turn references an earlier generation of feminist artists, the word ‘Femmage’ was coined by Miriam Schapiro to describe the use of traditional women’s techniques in contemporary art making. The exhibition, drawn from the SA collection includes works using combined or collaged materials, including paint, fabric, photography and found objects, with each work making reference to women and identity. There is a keen sense of social, political and personal enquiry in each of the works with exceptional pieces from Sarah Contos, Julie Fragar, Jacqui Stockdale, Caroline Rothwell, Annabelle Collett, Ali Gumillya Baker and many more. For those who are certain of their chosen career, the road is often a straight line of achievement with no deviation; for others, it can take time to find that perfect profession with an occasional detour and a stumble or two along the way before arriving at the ultimate destination. For Nicci Green it seems that all the threads of her past lives have been woven together and, through a diverting route, have led to her greatest success to date, the lighting design and manufacturing company, Articolo. Launched in late 2018, the Snaidero showroom is very much about the sense of arrival: the sense that the customer has arrived at something extraordinary, and the sense that something extraordinary has arrived in Australia. Designed as a series of kitchen interiors commensurate with the quality level of the offering from entry level to Ferrari, each interior, while singular, is tied back to the whole to be traversed as a continuous flowing exploration. Key to this execution is Natale’s floor plan, which allows each of the designs to be glimpsed and revealed with the natural rhythm of a home. The arrival counter is utterly sensational. Shortlisted in the 2018 IDEA Institutional category, The Terraces at Paddington, is an inner Sydney suburb development setting new standards in aged care through the creation of spaces for community care programs and luxurious amenities, including a café, library, theatrette, spa and gymnasium, recreational swimming pool, underground parking and the ‘Terraces’ garden. Designed by JPR Architects, with interiors by Gilmore Interior Design, The Terraces’ upgraded medical facilities include a new 23-bed dementia-specific care facility, palliative care and respite care. Located at the Scottish Hospital site, the project for Presbyterian Aged Care NSW (PAC) comprises a redevelopment of the 88-bed residential aged care amenity to a 100-bed facility including independent living apartments for over-55s. Mariana Hardwick, South Melbourne boutique Adam Kane Architects Set with the task of redefining bridal retail, Adam Kane Architects has created a new, contemporary boutique for Mariana Hardwick in South Melbourne, Victoria. The new showroom was required to be both elegant and refined, and the concept also sought to reimagine the luxury shopping experience. From an art and design perspective, there are two streams of readily identifiable designs to De Lucchi’s name. From the Memphis camp his Oceanic table lamp is arguably one of the most iconic of the movement’s pieces – with its happy row of striped rods, pink base and yellow suspended block a joy to behold. FRIDAY NIGHT Calm, cosy, modern and soft: these are the ingredients for the Friday Night bed. It was created by design duo Formstelle, which has created an extension of the Friday family that brings the cosiness of upholstered furniture into the bedroom. In the design, textiles and wood complement each other fluently in their formal language. The backrest swings in a gentle arc from the headboard down to the ground. Midway, the elegance of the shape changes – making an unforeseen bend while the graceful back becomes a solid foot of the bed.
