When Westfield commissioned Australian artist Jade Oakley to produce ambient art pieces for its central escalator cladding and a multistorey lift well at Westfield Parramatta, she was instantly inspired by the indigenous plants of the area. Oakley developed and designed the artwork for the public domain working with Axolotl’s art division AAP, a dedicated division of Axolotl that partners with artists and design firms to support the artistic process from conception to realisation. Oakley’s brief was to work with a white on white elegant palette, and to translate the intricate layers of her hand drawings into a similarly intricate artwork, while using materials and scales suitable for manufacture and a long life in the public domain. Eugenie Kawabata is a woman of many parts. That is to say her inquisitive nature has led her to study and experience multiple facets of design from fine art and graphic design to furniture design and upholstery. She is also a teacher, curator and mentor, when she is not creating her own unique products at her studio situated at the Abbotsford Convent in Abbotsford, an inner city suburb of Melbourne. inside: How long have you lived here and what drew you to the property? Angela Ferguson: My husband and I bought this place in 2003 and loved it from the moment we saw it. It was hideously decorated, with peach carpet, bright pink and bright yellow walls and ceilings, and metallic chandeliers decorated with bunches of grapes. It also had the original 1970s bathrooms, kitchen and floor tiles with avocado bathroom fittings and gold taps. It didn’t get sold at auction – it was so ugly that nobody wanted it! The Danish heritage brand presented the Milan Retreat, a thoughtfully curated apartment with six rooms, which explored the way we relax and recharge with a calming palette and soft styling. A favourite piece from the installation was the CH71 Lounge chair by Hans Wegner, which is being reintroduced for 2018. Tell us about the brand and products from Hamilton Conte. I think I would say that the Hamilton Conte collection is driven by narrative… a piece tends to be inspired by some sort of story, be it a personal or family memory, an idea gleaned while travelling or from daily life. We believe your interior should tell your story, and the pieces you include should resemble you. So whatever pieces you include should be charged with a certain amount of emotional value. We also try to integrate artistic elements to our designs. Functionality is always important, but if you’re buying a wall sconce, it’s great if you can have something with a more sculptural element that can add layers to your interior. Located in one of Melbourne’s leafy outer suburbs, Heather house sits comfortably within a landscape of tree-lined streets and large family homes that are both old and new. The home itself is a new build completed in 2017 after two years of design and construction and is a major achievement for principal Mardi Doherty of Doherty Design Studio. The clients contacted Doherty having greatly admired previous projects and were adamant that she should oversee every detail of their design, from architecture through to interiors. The residential work of Brisbane architects, Jade Myers and William Ellyett of practice Myers Ellyett, is intrinsically linked to its place, to vernacular building, a subtropical climate and a suburban context. Their latest project, Morningside residence, delves deeply into the opportunities of a typical Brisbane suburban site, exploring ways to order new rooms extending into the backyard of a postwar cottage. Conversion of the original house to dormitories, and the back garden to a levelled courtyard, sees the site cleverly transformed and family life reinvigorated. It’s a rare thing to say, but this is the book that every designer should have on their shelf. Generous beyond compare, the listings alone make this the little black book of secret resources. More than a shift, what it means to design an interior has undergone a major extrapolation. X+O A brand that inspires customers to ‘Live Colourfully’, the Kate Spade store in Chadstone, Melbourne, brings colour and sparkle from the façade all the way inside. The project, commissioned by Valiram, was designed by X+O. The store interior is inspired by brand elements, and the New York ‘girl’ that personifies the brand. The ‘bow’ (commonly integrated into the product) is featured on the shopfront, which is covered in backlit brass bows that sparkle, just like the product. The store draws elements from the New York girl’s ‘home’, which is filled with interesting mid-century furniture, art and fashion books, collected on her colourful travels. With more than 30 years in the interior design industry, Iain Halliday has not only shaped the aesthetic of Australian interior design, but has continually challenged fashion and taste. His is an aesthetic to die for – layered, rich, opulent and stunningly clear of clutter, despite the great plethora of objects and art his projects champion. It is this very fine eye that made his work exceptional in the early eighties, but remains true today. In fact, he has only improved with time. US engineer Frederick Taylor is credited as being one of the first people to ever design an office space in the early 1900s. He developed the Scientific Management Theory to maximise the efficiency and output of an office, which saw clerical workers somewhat crammed into long rows of basic desks and chairs, while their supervisors looked on from private offices. As technology progressed so did different design movements – from the Bürolandschaft approach, which was developed in the 1950s to increase the efficiency of communications within the office, to the virtual offices of the 21st century when the introduction of Wi-Fi and mobile phones meant that the definition of a workplace became far more flexible.
