This year a collection of some of the world’s most iconic contemporary chairs is being exhibited at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire in the UK. Echoing through Chatsworth’s halls from late March until October are the hallowed names of Marc Newson, Amanda Levete and Thomas Heatherwick, with enthusiasts lucky enough to be in the UK enjoying a serious treat.
Serious, but not solemn. As renowned New York Times columnist, Russell Baker, once wrote, “Being solemn is easy, being serious is hard.” US design doyen Paula Scher, applying this theme to creativity, observed, “Solemn design has important qualities that are socially correct and accepted by appropriate audiences. Serious design, on the other hand, is something else. It is spontaneous, intuitive, rebellious, inventive, maybe even arrogant and it strives for change.”
