Can you have your walking taco and eat it, too? Lately, I’ve been wondering about the politicization of our palates—what’s authentic, and how much that matters. Is the hillbilly cousin of Mexican street food a monstrosity or marvel? More than likely, it’s both. Blame chef David Chang’s Netflix documentary series, Ugly Delicious, for my ruminations. Vernon had appeared on the covers of SPIN and Billboard magazines. YOU’RE NOT LIKELY to just stumble upon the restaurant tucked behind a busy southside truck stop at the intersection of I-465 and State Road 37 with the rather straightforward name Indian & American Restaurant. In fact, the only views from inside the fluorescent-lit joint are large swaths of asphalt dotted with telephone poles and the occasional semi-truck that rumbles past. After an extensive renovation, the place is back on its game. RANDY KIMERY’S FIRST LOVE may be wood, but improvisation is a close second. Using snakeskins, coffee beans, pinecones, old countertops, and other found objects, the Columbus-based artist has been hand-turning pens that incorporate unorthodox materials for 14 years. “It’s a different form of recycling,” he says. “If I can turn it on a lathe, I can make a pen out of it.” He now has more than 500 designs for sale on his website. HATE IT? You’re definitely not the first. Once popular around the Mediterranean, the herb faced a smear campaign in European garden books in the 1600s, when writers linked the herb to its name, which derives from an ancient Greek word for “bed bug.” Beloved chef JULIA CHILD purportedly hated it, too, along with arugula.
