WHEN NEWS BROKE that pastry chef Pete Schmutte was leaving Cerulean to join Milktooth’s Jonathan Brooks at Beholder, nobody was more surprised by the frenzy that followed than Schmutte. “I guess I didn’t anticipate it having so much reach,” he marvels. It seems somebody hasn’t been reading his own press. The Internet has lit up with praise and artsy photos of Schmutte’s work for years. Though dessert-as-modern-art can be a sign of somebody wound tight, that’s not Schmutte’s style. “At the end of the day, I’m just cooking,” he says. About 18 months ago, a man in his early 60s with a bad knee reluctantly walked into Eric Monesmith’s Greenwood office. The man said that he’d had his other knee replaced five years ago, while living in Pennsylvania, and the post-operation recovery had been awful. In addition to the general soreness and frustration of rehab, the opioid his doctor had prescribed did little to alleviate his pain—instead, the pills made him sick and delirious. The pain in Ashlie Olp’s leg started in 2001. At one point, the endurance runner could barely walk across her bedroom due to the searing sensation. Yet even with a medical degree, she found it difficult to navigate the healthcare system. Olp, a primary-care physician, bounced from doctor to doctor, feeling rushed during appointments. When she needed an immediate appointment, she couldn’t get one. She struggled to get through the front-office staff to communicate with her doctor. When a patient arrived at St. Vincent’s new neighborhood hospital in Noblesville this summer complaining of flank pain, he was checked in, seen by a doctor, and had a CT scan, which was read remotely by a radiologist elsewhere in the St. Vincent system. The digital image confirmed what the doctor suspected: The patient had a kidney stone. He received pain medication and was discharged with an appointment to see a specialist. Sure, it sounds like a standard emergency-room visit, with one exception. MY ALMA MATER, Broad Ripple High School, did not survive the chopping block, becoming one of three city high schools closed due to shrinking enrollment. Before the announcement, hundreds of parents, students, and alumni had gathered to fight the inevitable. I wasn’t among them. Sometimes evolution is more necessary— and effective—than revolution.
