In the run-up to the general election, the first phase of which began on April 11, political parties went into overdrive on social media. Of course, the BJP, with its well-honed strategy—including, as reported by various media, unofficial teams operating in the cyber shadows to spread memes, viral campaigns, propaganda and lies masquerading as facts—eclipsed its nominal competition. Facebook said, on April 1, that it had removed hundreds of pages and accounts for what it called “coordinated inauthentic behaviour”.
