Looks like ‘China hands’ will continue to assume India’s top diplomatic job. Former envoy to China, Vijay Gokhale, is likely to succeed foreign secretary S. Jaishankar, who was given a one-year extension on January 28, 2017. Gokhale is among the four candidates from the 1981 batch under consideration, including Sujan Chinoy, Y.K. Sinha and Debraj Pradhan, the envoys in Japan, UK and Norway, respectively. Gokhale, who speaks Mandarin, was deeply involved in negotiating the Doklam border crisis, and was even praised for his role by Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, who met him on October 20, shortly before he left for Delhi to take over as secretary, economic relations.…
