All the kitchens of my childhood had a table in them. Whether it was a small green formica one or a wooden breakfast nook, we children always sat there chatting while my mom cooked. And just before every December holiday she would organise her young production line around the table to catch the coffee cookie dough as it came out of the cookie press, or to roll the ginger biscuits for the next child to press flat with a fork. WITH MASKING TAPE by DALA WATTS DIFFICULTY: easy TIME: half a day YOU WILL NEED ♥ white linen (the size of a tea towel) ♥ fabric paint in the colour of your choice ♥ wide craft brush ♥ sheet of cardboard ♥ wide masking tape ♥ craft knife and cutting mat ♥ metal ruler ♥ matching macine thread Place a piece of cardboard on your work surface and stick your fabric onto it with masking tape so it won't move around while you are working. Find the centre of your cloth and mark 5mm on either side. Stick a piece of masking tape to your cutting mat and mark four strips of 5mm each on the tape. RUSTIC BAGUETTES Makes: 3 x 40cm baguettes Preparation time: 1 hour, plus rising time ♥ 500g cake flour ♥ 10ml salt ♥ 5g instant yeast ♥ 350-375g lukewarm water (just a little warmer than room temperature) Mix the dry ingredients together well. Use a bowl large enough so the dough has enough space to rise. Mix in 350g water with a wooden spoon. Add a little more water if the dough is too dry. It should be a little sticky. Don't overwork the dough. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave to stand in a warm place for 30 minutes. PLUMS IN RUM WITH RASPBERRIES Makes: about 3 litres Preparation time: 30 minutes 1,3kg plums 400g raspberries 1kg sugar 1 cinnamon stick 700ml brown rum (54% alc by vol) 1 Wash the plums and rub dry. Cut in half and remove the stones. Carefully wash the raspberries and pat dry. Carefully mix the fruit with the sugar. Set aside for 20 minutes to draw. 2 Take a large jar or rum pot (well washed and dried) and add the fruit, sugar, cinnamon stick and rum. The fruit should be covered by the rum. Cover the jar. Keep in a cool, dark place for at least 3 months to draw. Serve the fruit and some of the sauce with ice cream. The rum syrup can also used for cocktails or desserts.…

FRUIT AND VEG DIFFICULTY: medium TIME: one hour All you need to make these easy-to-access produce bags is tube netting, ribbon and a sewing machine. Cut your desired length of netting then fold one end back into the tube and use your ribbon like bias binding to finish this end off. Sew on more ribbon to make a handle at this end, to hang the bag from a hook. Keep the opening wide enough so you can add your fruit and vegetables easily. Tie the bottom of the tube with a single knot and insert the produce. Simply untie the knot when you need to access the contents.
