Winning letter BROKEN AND MENDED Earlier this year I tore the cartilage in my hip joint while pruning my garden. After months of physiotherapy and rehabilitation I still had to have a very painful operation. On a day when I was feeling very low and vulnerable, I received the Ideas January/February 2018 edition. This proved to be an incredible pick-me-up. The articles on home offices, crochet patterns and recipes are lovely, but it was the article on kintsugi that gave me a completely different view on my injury, operation, pain and scars. The beautiful photographs and poetic quotes drew my attention and I felt excited to read about wabi-sabi. DIFFICULTY: medium TIME: half a day TO MAKE Remove the top two shelves of the bookcase and install a sturdy dowel rod across the top section to convert it into hanging space. We used three different shades of Dulux Rose Trellis to paint each section of the wardrobe a different colour, for an ombré effect. Attach new feet, like these ball and claw feet from Gelmar, to the base and decorate the top and bottom edges of the wardrobe with a polystyrene ceiling rose and cornices. DECOUPAGED TRAY DIFFICULTY: medium TIME: two hours Find a vintage illustration of a plate or tray in a book or download a suitable image from the internet – there are also many online sites that sell images. Have the picture enlarged to the desired sized at your local printer. It is important that the resolution of the image is at least 300DPI otherwise it will pixelate and be fuzzy around the edges. The printing company will be able to help check the size of the image. Have a thin piece of medium-density fibreboard (MDF) cut according to the measurements of your image. DIFFICULTY: hard work, but not difficult TIME: weekend, drying time included We used cement rather than plaster for the relief casting as it is stronger. You need to make two wooden cubes for the casings, one slightly smaller than the other so that you can cast the cement between them. You can adapt the measurements of the cubes according to the size of the ceiling tiles, as long as you allow at least 4cm between the casings so the cement table is strong enough. Have the wood cut at a hardware store so you only need to screw the pieces together. Set the scene We’ve dusted off a few of our favourite table decorating ideas and dolled them up a bit for our flamboyant table. Combine typical baroque elements with modern lighting and handmade table decorations to create the feel of a ritzy ‘disco ball’. We used dark green as the base colour and brightened it up with splashes of all the colours in the flower art prints on pages 38 and 49. Set a long table with your loveliest cutlery and glasses and add paper in every shape and form to put your personal stamp on the décor. It’s 7pm on a Saturday and I’m still sitting at my desk. Around me is a colourful mishmash of washi tape, pens and even my alphabet stamps that I haven’t seen in a very long time.
