Liezl Fischer and Nicola Redelinghuys had been living in their Cape Town home for five years when they moved abroad for work, so all thoughts of renovating it were put on the back burner. ‘It was rented out, but on our return in 2016 we decided to redesign it before moving back in,’ says Liezl. ‘We’d rented “family friendly” properties when visiting the city and had been disappointed,’ she says. ‘They were marketed as great for families and were anything but.’ Inspired by this experience, the couple set about designing a home that would be both family friendly and beautiful. When the Beaumont-Laurencias first saw the property, it was divided into three rental flats. ‘We had to strip it back to its bare bones,’ says Hannah. ‘It was in such a bad state. But it had a driveway at the side, which meant it had potential for extending. Having renovated a Victorian terrace in Manchester, we sold that, complete with contents. The only things we brought with us were the dining table and our four-poster bed. ‘We sketched designs for an extension and worked with an architect to draw up plans.’ Partition walls were removed and everywhere was reboarded and replastered. Thanks to improvements in Wi-Fi connectivity, smart lighting has become much more affordable in recent years, and easier to retrofit, too. Q Can I fit it myself? Custom-wired installations are complicated and pricy, which is why plug-and-play smart lighting is attractive. Read on before you decide whether encaustics are worth the effort or if you should go for faux. Q How do encaustics differ from normal tiles? Ottoman beds are the best for maximising storage space and storing seasonal clothing, bedding and things you don’t need to access often, such as luggage or hiking boots.
