Blending seamlessly into its streetscape, West End House is a blink-and-you’d-miss-it renovation of a classic worker’s cottage in inner-city Brisbane. Designed by Zuzana and Nicholas, the project shows how small, considered interventions can dramatically improve how a place is experienced.
The cottage occupies a tiny block and is a quintessential example of the timber-and-tin vernacular found throughout the suburb. Despite its size, the site enjoys a lush green outlook, where low chain-wire fences and sprawling tree canopies create a communal backdrop, each neighbour benefiting from the shared amenity. This shared landscape was a major draw for homeowner Tamsin, who, although having recently completed a much-loved renovation with the architects (Annerley House, see Houses 140), sought a walkable neighbourhood with a strong local community.
