One of the most fulfilling aspects of making Houses magazine and writing about architecture is the insight into the creative that is gathered before putting pen to paper. Visiting homes across Australia to talk with architects and clients about the homes they’ve imagined together provides an unparalleled education in Australian residential design. For this issue, I was invited into two wonderful homes designed by inventive architects with meaningful input from their artist clients. Both Beaconsfield House by Simon Pendal Architect (page 38), and Brunswick Apartment by Murray Barker and Esther Stewart (page 76) show the magic of creative collaborations. At Beaconsfield House, sculptural ceilings and washes of ultramarine create distinct atmospheres across spaces, while the geometry and pared-back details of Brunswick Apartment’s kitchen have the confidence of a graphic artwork.…

We have lived together for a long time, so we are very familiar with and appreciate one another’s aesthetics. “It’s exciting,” CJH Studio director Cassie James-Herrick says of the New York City commission her Victorian practice landed during a global pandemic. “It came about during iso, which was interesting … It’s sort of a whole different challenge but, in a sense, it’s just like doing a job in Melbourne because I couldn’t go to the city this year anyway. For Adelaide-based industrial designer Andrew Eden, simplicity is key. “In a complicated world filled with so much noise, simple things stand out,” explains the JamFactory furniture studio alumnus and founder of AG Studio. “And as I continually explore materials and processes that pique my interest, I’m evolving my aesthetic.” Andrew’s portfolio has an exuberant, youthful energy to it, achieved via an eclectic fusion of fresh styles, shapes and colours. Since establishing their practice Taylor and Hinds Architects in 2013, Poppy Taylor and Mat Hinds have produced a range of projects that reflect an intense commitment to extending the traditions of making places to dwell in Tasmania. Poppy and Mat’s studio in the coastal township of Cremorne, about a 30-minute drive out of Hobart, hints at the core values of their practice. Here, within a 1950s cottage on the neighbouring property to their own residence, life and work are necessarily and joyfully entangled, creating a humble setting that resonates with their humanistic approach to work. Nestled among a small neighbourhood of Victorian terraced houses in Melbourne, Lande’s South Yarra House certainly commands attention. But while maintaining a strong presence, the home simultaneously draws from and extends the ethos of its place. Lachlan McArdle, co-founder of Lande alongside Ellie Spinks, explains to me how cuttings from the baby’s tears plants that populate the nooks and crannies of the surrounding laneway have been replanted in the house’s new courtyard. The design of small architectural insertions into existing spaces is often as complex a proposition as larger design endeavours. When space is at a premium, function becomes imperative, and the conjuring and execution of design ideas – including how they are expressed in finishes and details – becomes amplified. The clarity of the idea that drives a small project can often be understood by observing how new elements sit within the existing built fabric. Whether the architect or designer’s intent is for new layers to blend seamlessly or to sit in stark contrast to what is already there, there’s a level of rigour required to make small-scale architecture sing.
