PERFORMING A gut renovation on one 19th-century townhouse is challenging enough; revitalizing two takes the degree of diffculty to new heights. If there is one team that could master this trick, it’s interior designer Jaimie Baird, founder of her eponymous New York City firm, and Michael McClung, senior principal architect at Connecticut-based Shope Reno Wharton. Together, they reimagined—and combined—a pair of 1873 brownstones in Boston, working to honor the buildings’ histories while embracing modern comforts. The two French Academic-style buildings had been divided into 16 apartments over the years. How do you turn a newly constructed home into a traditional Tudor? WHEN CARY RAY SET OUT TO transform a 1952 Georgian in Wilmington, North Carolina, into a new home for a family relocating from Texas, she embarked on what she calls “a partial gut.” This combination approach involved “embracing the charm and Southern heritage of the home,” Ray says, but “personalizing it for two adults and four kids.” To that end, she kept all of the delightful details—including fireplace surrounds, windows, a stairwell, and millwork—but changed some of the floor plan.
