“It feels really fresh yet still soulful.” This Westlake Village, California, residence had great bones—but needed a little star power to redefine its spaces. Enter Jeremiah Brent, founder of the eponymous design firm and lead designer on Netflix’s Queer Eye. “The goal was to find the balance between the pedigree of traditional design and the playfulness of modern design,” he says. Brent took on the family’s five-bedroom, seven-bathroom house after renovating their vacation home in the Bay Area. Spanning more than 10,500 square feet, their primary base in Los Angeles County needed to be suitable for “the art of gathering,” replete with cleverly designed outdoor spaces perfect for conversation, which Brent says is “an integral part of the client’s lifestyle.” The property, originally built in 2013, features detailed millwork, but…

WHEN A NEW YORK– based family decided to build a ground-up getaway home in Wellington for trips with their daughters—both competitive equestrians—designer Tom Scheerer looked to the sport as his muse. “Without being too obvious, we used certain elements that were reminiscent of barns and stables,” he says, adding that the clients wanted their new home to feel akin to Scheerer’s own, on Great Abaco Island, in the Bahamas, where the shutters fling open to the breeze. WHILE CALIFORNIA DESIGNER (and former Jersey boy) Joe Lucas was designing his sister’s home in Mantoloking, New Jersey, he had a running joke with his family, who held firm ideas on what a beach house should look like. “I just kept going, ‘Okay, it’s not a theme park; it’s your house,’ ” he says of their stereotypical choices. “They love anything nautical.” But before he could enact any aesthetic changes, he had to ensure the bayfront property could withstand the now-regular tidal flooding. Working with Daniel Lynch of B.L.D.G. Architecture, Lucas raised the main house an entire level and created a new ground level below, with a screened-in porch, mudroom, powder room, and garage.
