A COUPLE PURCHASED THIS gorgeous hilltop property in Millbrook, New York, for its showstopping setting, not for the existing house, a midcentury-modern ranch. We all foresaw a total rebuild in a few years’ time, so I started the project with a short-term refresh in mind. As the process unfolded, however, it became increasingly clear how fabulous the house could be. That is when we decided to keep the original structure and launch into a thorough renovation. I chose patterns in this house for fun and function, like the faux bois wallpaper in the airy living room that channels the space’s original, paneled midcentury vibe. CALL IT A family tradition. “Growing up as a creative kid, I was always the first one in the house to start decorating for Christmas,” says stylist and designer Alfredo Paredes, founder of Alfredo Paredes Studio. The same now goes in the Shelter Island, New York, home that Paredes shares with his husband, Brad Goldfarb, and their two children. “For me, it’s all about creating memories and embracing nostalgia,” Paredes explains. “Maybe it’s a product of being a Cuban American. IT WAS ALMOST TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. DEVIN KIRK WAS eating popcorn and watching TV the first time he laid eyes on unit #12B—the inspiration for the Chicago condo featured in the 2006 rom-com The Break-Up. As Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn fought over the enviable space on the small screen, the designer marveled at the home’s barrel-vaulted entryway, high ceilings, and great proportions.
