The “Boost Shootout” cover story by freelancer Richard Holdener looked at how a Paxton centrifugal supercharger, HP Performance turbocharger, and Holley Roots-style supercharger affected the output of a stroker 5.0L Ford. This was not a to-the-death competition; instead, Holdener limited boost pressure to make it as real-world and apples-to-apples as possible. The Paxton made the most hp (617), the HP turbo the most torque (618 lb-ft), but Holdener did not name a winner, saying only the end user “will be able to choose the optimum combination of power production, cost, and ease of installation.” Greg Smith’s ’67 Mustang, photographed for the cover by Randy Lorentzen, fit the theme well as it was powered by a turbocharged, Windsor-based stroker.
