The Clydesdale breed originated in Lanarkshire, Scotland, historically known as Clydesdale, in the mid-1700s. Farmers needed a strong, agile horse capable of working in Scotland’s hilly farmland, and began crossing native mares with imported Flemish stallions from Belgium.
The result was a powerful, versatile draft horse, perfect for farm work. By the early 1800s, Clydesdales were commonly bred and used throughout Scotland and northern England.
