JANET HODGE THE lifelong horsewoman, highly respected in the equestrian world, passed away on Christmas Day, aged 77. Janet lived in West Sussex, teaching and influencing generations of riders. Aged 16, Janet left home to pursue her passion for horses. She was a groom for the Hall and Woodhouse family in Dorset before moving into teaching, alongside Sybil Smith at the Maidenhead branch of the Cadogan Riding School. During these formative years Janet developed the skills, principles and practices that shaped her life’s work. She was a founding force behind the Hope in the Valley Riding for the Disabled Association centre in Lewes, East Sussex, where she helped create a supportive, accessible environment for riders with disabilities, something she was immensely proud of. A PILOT scheme to boost participation of young people who did not have access to horses has been successful, and could be a way of highlighting future career paths. Last year Aberdeen Riding Club (ARC) launched Project Mario to increase participation of 11- to 16-year-olds from low socio-economic households. The initiative was part of the British Horse Society’s (BHS) Everyone Welcome strategy, in which 12 centres developed ways to increase participation in under-represented groups. Project Mario involved five young people, with no or little horse experience, having 11 weekly riding and horse management sessions. THE team behind the new age of frangible fences, as seen for the first time in Britain last season, are travelling the world to share their knowledge and learn new ideas. A range of traditional-looking cross-country fences, which incorporated a frangible “parallelogram” chassis, were seen for the first time at Thoresby 2025 (news, 27 March and 3 April). Course-designer, organiser and chairman of the FEI risk management steering group Stuart Buntine, Swedish inventor Mats Bjornetun, who is behind MIM clip frangible technology, and members of Mr Buntine’s course-building team worked together on the designs. ALTHOUGH beloved of such horses’ keepers, the luxuriant flowing “feathers” typically found on the lower legs of certain breeds such as Shires, Clydesdales and many traditional cobs are unfortunately also often host to some unwanted “passengers”. These are the mites of the species Chorioptes bovis. In horses the mites are often described as Chorioptes equi, but it is now thought that a true equine mite species does not exist, and consequently cattle may infect horses and vice versa. THE PARASITE THE mite is a parasite of the heavy breeds of horses, and the assumption has been that the skin surface microclimate (protected, warm and humid) and the accumulation of scales under the long hair on the lower legs due to the presence of feathers, favour its survival and proliferation. Hartpury College, Glos HANNAH JONES’ second-generation home-bred mare Party Lass (Edith) continued her competition comeback with a double novice silver section win. The Party Trick daughter, now eight, sustained an eventing injury as a six-year-old that required lengthy time off and rehabilitation. “We spent most of last year walking her in long-reins,” said Hannah, a small animal vet. “We started taking her out to dressage shows last autumn, and she’s been really good. A METHOD by which horse manure can be converted into a sustainable product that could be a substitute for some plastics is in development – and the early signs are very promising. Perry Robinson, who removes equestrian muck heaps, is working with Professor Mohan Edirisinghe OBE of University College London (UCL), and researcher Mehmet Aydogdu, to produce cellulose from manure via a “pressure spinning” technique Professor Edirisinghe invented. I was horse-mad as a kid and grew up in Sinnington, North Yorkshire, famous for the Sinnington Hunt. We didn’t have land, so I’d go pony trekking once a year and have the odd riding lesson. I got my first horse after emigrating to Australia, aged 40. She was called Secret, a 14.3hh dark bay stock horse with one small sock. I had lessons with an English lady called Jill Severn, who used to lease eventers, and I tagged along and started eventing, too. I studied French and German at university. A DEBILITATING and almost incurable condition caused by a build-up of lymph fluid in the lower legs, chronic progressive lymphoedema (CPL) results in gradually increasing swelling and the development of permanent skin folds, nodules and ulcerations. There is believed to be an underlying genetic predisposition to the disease, reflected in its prevalence in certain draught breeds such as Shires, Clydesdales, Friesians and Belgian Draught horses. In the latter breed 85% are reported to be eventually affected. The disease starts at an early age and progresses through the life of the affected horse, resulting in disfigurement (the lower legs become cone-shaped), lameness and, not uncommonly, humane destruction.
