WHAT an exciting competition played out in France last week for the European Dressage Championships. Congratulations to the British team of Becky Moody, Carl Hester, Lottie Fry and Andrew Gould who came home with team silver. Carl once again did his utmost for the team effort. RIDERS and carriage drivers are frustrated as they cannot access woodland routes, after a hollow promise to “make riding accessible to more riders across the nation's forests”. H&H reported that equestrians had lost access to off-road parking at Abbot's Wood and Friston Forest in East Sussex (news, 7 August). The move happened in May, when Forestry England scrapped the requirement for paid permits to ride in most woodlands, including those managed by third parties such as TROT (Toll Rides Off-Road Trust). This followed a survey by Forestry England, supported by the British Horse Society (BHS), in 2023 as part of Forestry England's review of its permit systems. NEW OPTION FOR NECK SURGERY A PIONEERING surgical procedure for horses with nerve compression in the neck is being carried out at a second hospital. H&H reported that uniportal endoscopic foraminotomy was being offered at Liphook Equine Hospital (vet clinic, 21 August). The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has announced the expansion of its equine referral hospital to include the procedure. “This will offer horse owners and referring veterinary surgeons a viable treatment option for this condition, where previously only limited options were available to prevent long-term suffering,” an RVC spokesperson said. OPINION MY two main roles in Crozet were providing commentary for FEI TV and warming up my old friend Carl Hester. It was busy but rewarding, with many moments to remind me why I love this sport. The facilities were superb, set in the grounds of a smart, eco-conscious hotel in view of Mont Blanc. The organising committee impressed me with their flexible and consultative approach, working with chefs d'equipe to adapt warm-up arrangements and other details.
