With two ambitious sons, Will and Olli, wanting to go to as many shows as they can, we live life to the full, which certainly keeps this “old-timer” from getting bored. Studies comparing noseband pressure and rein forces exerted by the two types of bridle were presented in a session at the British Equine Veterinary Association Congress (12-14 September). Researcher and biomechanics expert Russell MacKechnie-Guire presented a study on noseband pressure. “The noseband and bridlehorse interaction has received quite widespread attention from ethical and welfare perspectives,” he said. “Bridlehorse interaction is complex. “There have been concerns over use of double bridles but there’s very little quantitative comparison of the double with the snaffle.” The team recruited 13 horses and riders competing at inter II or grand prix, used to working in both…

BECCYKING moved to Carmarthenshire five years ago from Surrey with her other half and her parents. “We moved because property was cheaper. ATHELSTAN - the first king of England - has a pilgrimage route or “way” in his name that covers 30 churches across north Wiltshire. Buying an obligatory bottle of gin from our local shop, I happened upon a book that charts this walk and each church in detail. It is in part an homage to a lady called Hilary Peters who lived as a “part-time hermit” in Worcester Lodge, where we have our opening and Boxing Day meets. Reading a brief history of the first church in the book at Dauntsey - in our Thursday country - hunting is already mentioned, if in strange circumstances. ANNUAL AWARD FOR VOLUNTEERS AN ANNUAL award honouring the invaluable contribution of volunteers has been launched by a rider with terminal cancer who has given countless hours to the sport. The Sally Wood Volunteer Award, created with BEDE Events, will be presented by Sally at Osberton Horse Trials (3-6 October). Sally Wood, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer in January 2023, has volunteered at equestrian events on and off for much of her life, including Chatsworth, Osberton, Burghley and events in the Derbyshire, East Midlands and South Yorkshire areas. “There’s often awards for local riders or grooms, but without volunteers, events wouldn’t happen, and I want to acknowledge that,” said Sally. A RIDER who got the call to say the kidneys she needed were available while at a show drove there in the horsebox with the horse still in the back. Marie Cox was at the British Dressage under-25 championships at Sheepgate with her daughter Lauren when the Nottingham hospital called to say there was a match. Marie had suffered kidney failure in 2020, managed with dialysis, and had been on the transplant list since May. “They said then that the call could come at anytime but it wasn’t likely to be sooner than 12 months, and it might never happen,” Lauren told H&H. It was great to see so many British-bred horses and new names taking the titles. What a fabulous wedding present for Lewis Robertson-Carrier who took the national title on Diego V. The contest was wide open and very close – it could have gone to anybody. Due to it being in September it lacks the team horses who are on breaks after a busy summer. I still feel it’s a class that could be held earlier in the year so that all combinations can be included. The young horses are among the most popular for spectators, so I was disappointed to see the ride-judging part of the young horse classes cut to just two…

I grew up in Ferns, Co Wexford in Ireland, and I met my husband Ciaran at school. I didn’t have anything to do with horses growing up, but Ciaran rode until he was a teenager. In 1990, we moved to Aberdeenshire, where we both worked in the oil industry. My daughter Orla started learning to ride aged six and when she was nine, she got her first pony, Tom. THE British Hound Sports Association’s much trumpeted National Trail Hunting Day dawned warm and windy here in Northumberland. It was the Percy who had agreed to host the meeting of the tribes in our area; eight packs in total, comprised mostly of smaller outfits like us, the West Percy, Border, North Tyne, North Cumberland, Bewcastle, plus a couple of larger ones, namely the Morpeth and Tynedale.
