No matter that some top combinations were ruled out with the World Championships to attend in two weeks’ time, the start list gave us name after name that we couldn’t wait to see. THE Cheltenham Gold Cupwinning amateur jockey died on 29 August aged 72, from cancer. Born Andrew Jim Wilson in Maidstone, Kent, in 1950, Mr Wilson’s family relocated and he was raised in Ireland. He spent his early years riding for trainers Paddy Mullins and Georgie Wells, then went to France where he rode for Jacko Doyasbere. He returned to the UK and rode for George Owen, as well as Dan Moore in Ireland. He rode his first winner, Advocate, in 1970 at Clonmel. He later spent seven years riding for David Nicholson in the Cotswolds, and while there he met his wife Melinda. A NEW equine recruit was in action along with a colleague to stop an alleged drink-driver. Gloucestershire Constabulary’s newest mounted branch member Kingsholm, with Prestbury and riders PCs Hastings and Walker, acted after a member of the public spotted the driver drinking from what looked like a can of cider, a day into the force’s campaign against drink- and drug-driving. “Police Horse Kingsholm, ridden by PC Walker, is our newest horse to the team and he and PH Prestbury acted as instructed by the officers, helping bring the incident to a swift conclusion,” said Inspector Sarah Blake. It’s one of the season’s highlights and it’s not to be missed. I was fortunate enough to judge the novice supreme and there were some real quality animals presented. What struck me was that each exhibit was of a good type for their section. Each pony performed well and both my champion (Rotherwood Fancy That) and reserve (Briarhill Buddy Bolden) both had a “look at me” quality. THE tests of both Kitty King and Tim Price had beautiful highlights. Kitty rode Vendredi Biats forwards, with really good energy and was mistake-free. Tim’s test with Vitali was fluent and harmonious, the contact was supple and the balance so consistent. IN early January this year, the chairman of the Zetland offered me the position of joint-master and huntsman, commencing 1 May 2022. My immediate response, like an overexcited schoolboy, was of course, “Yes, thank you very much – I would be honoured to accept.” My grandfather hunted with the Zetland in the 1970s, no less than three days per week.
