The greatest show on earth is taking place within the restrictions allowed that caused havoc for all involved, but those working behind the scenes to deliver the Games are doing so against the odds. I’ve watched the later Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) qualifiers unfold with the usual marking system reinstated, but with that has come a flurry of confused and deflated competitors. This begs the question, is the mark system really fit for purpose or is it failing us? I much prefer the no marks approach as more often than not I come away feeling that the marks awarded don’t give a true reflection of a class on the day. THE decision to get rid of the marking system for the 2021 RIHS qualifiers and final continues to be a bone of contention. The biggest classes of this year’s show were dedicated to the M&Ms and while judges Jill Godden and Mary Rose Cole described the competition as “top drawer”, both agreed that the mammoth class numbers could have been sorted more quickly with a mark sheet. “It’s a time factor, mainly,” said Mary. “It can be difficult when you have to sort through so many in a short space of time. RIDE judge Rachel Thomas made a fine job of officiating the horse classes despite riding in scorching temperatures. Rachel noted that the eventual champion Our Cashel Blue was initially called in second after the go-round. “I’ve ridden him four times, the first time at HOYS a few years ago, and he’s improved so much in his ride and frame since then,” she said. “He moved up to win because he was a proper showman. PRIMARY school teacher Rebecca Robb has found a winning formula that allows her to juggle work and competing. A SELECTION of the College Valley North Northumberland hounds made a rare trip south this week – to take part in the hound show at the Great Yorkshire Show or “Harrogate”, as it tends to be called. This was unfamiliar territory for the hounds, whose summer outings tend to include some local hill shows, Lowther and the Scottish hound show. HOW shocked I was to read that On The Brash had to be put down due to laminitis (news, 15 July). It makes me realise just how lucky my retired showjumper is. She suffered some trauma a few months ago and also, unbeknown to her previous owners, had equine metabolic syndrome without showing any signs of it. During the first and second lockdowns, her routine didn’t change but four weeks ago, I rode a powder keg on legs. PROLIFIC showman Allister Hood and his much-loved partner Our Cashel Blue have retired from the sport. The announcement came at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS, 20-25 July) where 66-year-old Allister and the lightweight cob won the Winston Churchill supreme trophy for a second time. Allister, who has taken the supreme title eight times previously, said he had been “so lucky to have amazing horses and owners over the years” and support from his family. Allister and Our Cashel Blue have enjoyed an illustrious career and won many major accolades, including standing cob champion at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) in 2016 and 2017, as well as taking the supreme title in 2016. WOW, what an exciting Olympics this is turning out to be, at the halfway point with the team medals now decided. The standard seems to be getting higher and higher. My favourite up-and-coming star, who stole the show, was Sabine Schut-Kery with Sanceo. Although not so well known outside of the US, I’ve been lucky enough to see her before, and was a little surprised she didn’t get a higher mark in the grand prix. She rode with so much harmony, with her beautiful horse always staying in self-carriage, maintaining a light, uphill frame.
