Irish eventer Jonty Evans has successfully completed his first British Eventing class since his 2018 accident. Jonty rode Cooley Rorkes Drift in the open novice at West Wilts on 13 August. Britain’s youngest trainer Chelsea Banham, 20, sent out her first winner on 13 August in Voice Of A Leader ridden by Joey Haynes at Lingfield. Chelsea said it was a “real team effort”. Trainer Harriet Bethell has undergone surgery after a serious head injury sustained in a fall on the gallops. Harriet’s father, William, said the family has received “incredible” support. To ensure straightness, aim for a slight shoulder-fore feeling — without the bend — all the way, ensuring there is enough power and engagement. Be careful where you put your legs. It’s easy for the horse to slip a change. Keep your legs still in the medium canter, and give very clear aids before you come back to the next movement. Don’t always put a change in at the end, or your horse will anticipate it. It’s a good idea to ride counter-canter after collecting. THE countdown to an Olympic year is always exciting and challenging in equal measure, but this year has been particularly busy for British Dressage (BD), as several of our initiatives come to fruition. We started 2019 with a membership survey to give us some insight into our members’ views and satisfaction levels, as well as provide vital information for our projects and help shape our next five-year strategy. In total, 23% of members took part, and the data returned has been invaluable. In some respects it confirmed what we already knew, but overall it has provided strong indication of what each of our stakeholder groups feels is most important. SEVEN-year-old Isla Smith made sure the journey from Scotland was worthwhile after she clinched her first-ever HOYS ticket. Isla rode her mother Laura’s Colne Pedro to a win in the lead-rein pony of show hunter type. IT was good to see Lucy Killingbeck back in a ride-judging role after a freak accident at home two years ago left her with multiple injuries and the prognosis of “never being able to ride again”. BRITAIN’S talented pony riders brought home two gold and three silver medals from the 2019 European Championships for Ponies in Strzegom, Poland. The eventers lead the way with team gold, plus individual gold and silver, while the showjumpers won a brace of silver medals. The dressage team finished just off the podium in fourth place, with a number of personal best scores. Britain was dominant in the eventing to win team gold by over 18 penalties from France in silver, while Ireland took bronze. TEAM GBR SCORES ENDURANCE FINISH GREAT BRITAIN’S senior endurance team finished fifth of 11 countries in the FEI European Endurance Championships at Euston Park, Suffolk on 17 August. This was Britain’s first successful team finish since 2010. Spain took gold, France silver and Germany bronze. Rachael Atkinson (23rd; Tannasg Psyches Realm) and Annette Masterson (24th; Shoshana) were the first British riders home. POINT-TO-POINT fans can look forward to extra Saturday fixtures during the 2019/20 season. The fixtures list, released on 12 August, features a number of changes to avoid congestion within the calendar. It also sees the addition of three new venues. Dunsmore in Devon, Shelfield Park in Warwickshire and Chilfrome in Dorset are the three new courses joining the sport. They will host the Dunsmore Racing fixture on 17 November — the opening day of the season — Croome and West Warwickshire on 21 March and Cattistock on 2 May respectively. The number of pre-Christmas meetings has dropped from 12 in 2018/19 to nine this season. THIS year was my second year stewarding at the NAF Five Star International Hartpury Horse Trials. We got soaked twice and were on the course for 12 hours due to holdups. However, what made it bearable were the riders stopping to thank us and the spectators being respectful of our requests for moving whenever needed. The course photographers were always there with a smile and ready for a quick chat, and we were well looked after with refreshments. The only downside was the weather, but even that couldn’t put a dampener on the day. Therefore, I’d like to say a massive thank you to all involved for making the event so special. THE arrival of twin foals tends to hit headlines. When breeding mare Didi Van Weltevreden delivered not just one foal this spring but two, her connections were certainly surprised. “We hadn’t realised that she was carrying a twin foal, until the birth,” says Marjolijn Takke of Beukestein Stables in Maartensdijk, the Netherlands. “She had developed a really big belly towards the end of her pregnancy, but the vet told us that was normal as the mare is big. “When the filly foal arrived and was not that large, we joked that there might be another one in there,” Marjolijn continues. “Then Didi started to labour again and delivered the second foal, a colt.” Didi’s double delivery is indeed remarkable, according to Dr Charles Cooke MRCVS of Equine Reproductive Services. “As…

THE Tokyo test event experience was an eye-opener, even if in many ways it felt like a home from home with so many familiar faces from national teams and officials. The Olympic experience is so in-demand — several US fence judges had paid their own way in the hope of being selected for next year. Tokyo has a real excitement to it, but it’s also crazy and overwhelming — the language barrier made it feel like the film Lost in Translation. The traffic is horrendous at certain times and a taxi is £80-120 from the city to the venue. There will be buses from the Athletes’ Village next year, but for anyone without accreditation, public transport was challenging to navigate initially, although efficient once you understood it. The gelding had nearly four years away from competition after a number of health-related setbacks. “He ended up with laminitis despite a strict diet, and the vets confirmed equine metabolic syndrome,” explained Jodie. “His pedal bone had dropped, so he had an intensive shoeing programme for a while, then he had an allergic reaction which made him hypersensitive. THERE is a huge difference competing at a “one-off ” show like this than continuing to jump at regular venues. There are plenty of nice rings in this country, but we brought eight young horses here and they all gained valuable experience in this international arena with its unique atmosphere. The courses for the finals have been quite technical, but the preliminary rounds were nice and flowing and got horses off to a good start; the standard in the young horse classes was amazing. And we have enjoyed watching lots of quality British-bred horses, including our own, progressing through to the finals. LIKE many shows across the country, Shrewsbury fell victim to the weather. A freak thunder and lightning storm greeted competitors in the third class of the day after a previously sunny outlook. It forced organisers to cancel the Frank Tanner memorial cup as the rain flooded part of the warm-up arena and, as the grounds here dry out quickly, they hoped to save the going for the following day. Lowther, Cumbria THE culmination of the foxhound judging at Lowther is the overall championship in the Fell hound ring. The best modern English hound is pitted against the best of the hill hounds, the Welsh hounds and the local favourites, the Fell hounds. Each ring also provides a senior judge for the finale and all four of them have to agree and adjudicate on an overall winner. Ian Hawkins, huntsman of the Sennybridge Farmers, is a Welshman with huge hunting experience and wisdom, and was the judge of the Welsh hounds. A PHOTOGRAPHER had an unexpected surprise while snapping competitors at Aston-le-Walls last month. Tracey Wilkinson was sitting in front of an intermediate fence to get a head on shot of eventers jumping into the water in the advanced class, without being in the horses’ line of sight. Her new offspring continue to thrive. “The little colt was way smaller at birth and didn’t know how to suckle, so we fed him by bottle several times that night,” she says. “By the morning, he was standing and suckling by himself. BRITISH-BRED horses, and British breeding in general, don’t have enough recognition. Many people are still buying horses bred in Europe, but there are so many good horses bred here, and they must be better promoted. It’s been shown time and again that foreign judges do appreciate them, so why do so many riders favour Dutch and German horses, for example? We herald our good horses that have come from abroad, but we don’t receive the reciprocal treatment in other European countries. We must all work harder to change this. Breeders and breeding should be given much more recognition, being listed on databases and in show programmes. It can often be difficult to find out how horses are bred. FELLOW columnist Robert Walker and myself have both commented on the issue of judges penalising young horses for being a little immature. We have both received very positive comments from the showing community. It seems the trend nowadays is that older horses are the norm, whereas they used to be unheard of when they reached double figures as they would usually have gone on to do another job. I think we need to realise that without these fresh, young horses, we won’t have any for the future. A young horse should not be penalised because of its age if it performs well. WE have just got back from a week in Portugal, staying with friends in their house in the Alentejo, east of Lisbon. The house belongs to one of Adam’s former hunt secretaries from the South and West Wilts, Clare, who grew up in this wonderful place and still manages to spend a lot of time there.
