THE last time I was in Rotterdam, it was as dressage editor reporting Britain’s first team gold medal in the sport. That was eight years ago. It was a phenomenal few days and, although we knew the team had the ability to deliver this historic victory, it still felt unreal when it happened. Now Britain has long made their name as a dressage nation and go to the European Championships in Rotterdam in less than two weeks well in the mix for a medal. As for Britain’s showjumpers, they have a habit of pulling it out the bag just at the right moment. A HOUND decorated with horses, appropriately named Horse & Hound, is going on sale in aid of helping equines. The fibreglass dog is one of more than 100 named the Haslemere Hounds that have been decorated by artists or schoolchildren. They are on display in Haslemere, Surrey, and being sold for charity. Funds raised from the sale of the Horse & Hound, decorated by portrait artist Georgea Blakey, will go to RSPCA Lockwood Equine Centre, Surrey. It will be on display in estate agent Clarke Gammon Wellers’ office in Haslemere High Street, until the auction ends on 16 September. EVIDENCE is emerging of radical new procedures in the equine world. Last year, Horse & Hound reported the case of a polo pony, thought to be in South America, whose lower leg had been amputated and replaced with an artificial limb so she could continue to be used as an embryo donor. While caution should be exercised when making judgements based on online video evidence, it is my view that a horse with a prosthetic limb cannot have an acceptable standard of living. Given the anatomy and physiology of horses, and their natural herd instinct, this procedure is bound to compromise freedom to express normal behaviours and to live without discomfort. I do not believe that the economic benefit to the owner of retrieving valuable embryos from this mare is…

Start your half-pass with a few steps of shoulder-fore. Extra flexion doesn’t come from bending the horse more in the direction of the half-pass. Remember to keep a connection on the outside rein. Increased expression comes from the inside shoulder’s ability to move freely. Be careful not to block with the inside rein by fixing it at the withers or by taking your hand across the neck. Aim for a soft, constant rein contact and position your hand slightly in off the withers. Less is more. Don’t do half-pass after half-pass. Focus on these exercises instead. Make learning a positive experience. Your horse’s happiness and soundness are paramount.…

HARTPURY UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE has invested heavily in a cross-country irrigation system. The benefits of this are obvious in terms of grass coverage and the fact that the ground was able to sustain the extreme weather conditions. I WAS lucky enough to design the CCI2*-L track for the under-18s at Frickley Park last month. The ground was good, all bar those who tipped off seemed happy with the course and the prize money and sponsor base exceptional. Yet a general sadness pervaded as next year these championships move from this special venue to Bishop Burton College. This is probably one of the most unjust legacies of the much-criticised British Eventing review of championship and international fixtures earlier this year that the sport now has to live with for the next five years. IT’S a real honour to be the ambassador for the national championships, so I was thrilled to be offered the chance. It’s a great show — one to which everyone looks forward to and a highlight on the calendar for a lot of people. Morris, 81, is to appeal against a lifetime ban from equestrian sport, handed down by US Center for SafeSport following claims of “sexual misconduct involving a minor”. Mr Morris said he was “deeply troubled by the US Center for SafeSport’s findings” and he was “in the process of disputing them”. US Equestrian said: “The US Center for SafeSport investigated the allegations against Mr Morris, found them credible, issued their ruling, and banned Mr Morris for life. Iona Sclater, a 15-year-old who had been long-listed for the 2019 pony European championships, was riding at home when the accident occurred, on 11 August. On the same day, 32-year-old Jennifer Chapin suffered fatal injuries in a rotational fall in the warm-up for the cross-country at the Green Mountain Horse Association’s Festival of Eventing, in South Woodstock, Vermont, USA. A NEW blood test that can diagnose all stages of a small redworm burden, including encysted, will be available in September. Launched by Austin Davis Biologics (ADB), and developed by the Moredun Research Institute, the test will be available to owners via vet practices. A spokesman for ADB said until now it has not been possible to test for encysted small redworm as fecal egg counts only detect the presence of egg laying adult worms, meaning a routine wormer treatment has been the recommended practice. “The commercial availability of a diagnostic test to detect all intra-host stages of small redworm will be of great value to veterinarians, enabling them to make a differential diagnosis as well as informed treatment decisions,” said the spokesman. EXPERTS in maths, physics, equine medicine and biology have worked together to research how horses’ hooves grow. It is hoped the study, by the school of veterinary medicine and science at University of Nottingham with the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition and the Royal Veterinary College, which was published in the Royal Society Interface Journal, will provide “alternative directions” in understanding hoof diseases. The scientists used hooves from equines put down for non-research purposes, and analysed the feet of living animals who were underweight or obese. I HAVE been an enthusiastic spectator at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe for over 20 years. I love the event, its setting and how close I can get to the action. However, while it is one of the most enjoyable events for cross-country viewing, the reduction in competitor numbers in recent years is very noticeable. The highlight was always the open championship, with the top 10 riders going in reverse order. However, over the past few years, I have noticed fewer competitors. But with this comes a risk that we get so carried away by our own technical prowess that we lose sight of what ought to be at the heart of everything we do — the welfare and best interests of our equine patients. ‘Flirt with power and collection’ ENCOURAGING freedom and expression in a half-pass can transform it into a test highlight. Here are some exercises I use to improve the movement. TACKLING THE ISSUE 1 Riders often focus on the position of the shoulders and whether the hindlegs are trailing or leading, but suppleness through the ribcage is also instrumental in developing increased expression in a half-pass. An easy exercise to help this is to ride up the long side starting in shoulder-in, then switch to travers, back to shoulder-in, then back to travers. With each change in exercise, think about yielding your horse off the inside leg. I’LL be heading to the Rotterdam Europeans with the fantastic memory of winning Britain’s first gold medal at the 2011 championships. We don’t have the pressure of qualifying for Tokyo, so it will be more about asking the maximum from new horses and riders. Gareth Hughes has earned fabulous scores with Classic Briolinca this year, and young Lottie Fry has been quite simply fantastic. My old friend and mentor Anne van Olst and her husband Gertjan have supplied Lottie with superb horses, and along with the rest of the team, they can travel to Rotterdam with high hopes.
