Jenny Gaskell proved this at Frickley Park Horse Trials on 28 July, when she saved the life of a spectator who collapsed with a suspected heart attack. Jenny, who was warming up for the intermediate novice showjumping, jumped off her horse Mycathlly Zilando Image to administer CPR until event medics arrived on the scene. THE London leg of the LGCT was an unbelievable show once again. It’s a super venue and it’s nice for British riders to get a glimpse into this world. But therein lies the problem — the LGCT has become a totally insular subsection of the sport. SINCE my last column (11 July), there has been another semi-final of the young horse classes at Port Royal with different judges. This led to several of the same horses that did not qualify at Hartpury competing again, with quite a turnaround in the results. In one case, a combination scored 10% — or an entire mark higher — than at Hartpury. This horse did not have issues in its test at Hartpury, but was judged to be of completely different quality a week later. Time will tell which judges were correct, but would it be sensible to have the same judges at both semi-finals each year to try to maintain a “line”? Qatar Goodwood Festival, Goodwood Racecourse, West Sussex THE John Gosden/Frankie Dettori bandwagon rolled into Goodwood and their amazing run of Group One successes continued on the South Downs last week. The pair took the meeting’s two biggest races when Stradivarius, one of the all-time great stayers, won the Qatar Goodwood Cup, while Too Darn Hot put up a reputation-redeeming performance in the Sussex Stakes. THE USA has secured its final Olympic place as its eventers took gold at the Pan Am Games. The team won at the Army Equitation School in Lima, Peru, on the final day of competition on Sunday (4 August). Brazil took the only other spot on offer by taking silver while Canada took bronze. The USA also won individual gold and silver, with Boyd Martin (Tsetserleg) and Lynn Symansky (RF Cool Play), while Brazil’s Carlos Parro (Quaikin Qurious) took bronze. CIARAN GLYNN can’t be called an amateur event rider. He’s ridden for Ireland, finished 14th at both Burghley and Badminton within the past year and makes his living out of horses. But this year at least, he competes just one horse, the mare November Night. His income comes from running “a very large” competition and livery yard, Killossery Lodge Stud in Co. Done properly, a rein-back is impressive, as it shows your horse is still on the bridle and reacting to your leg. However, there is nothing worse than a messy rein-back. A good rein-back is achieved with communication through your hand and leg. Gently encourage your horse, squeezing through your hands to ask him to move back, and gently encourage with your legs. Practise reining back by riding back one stride at a time — make sure you give your horse lots of praise when he has done it. Make sure your horse stands after he’s walked that stride back, so he doesn’t get into the habit of running backwards. As soon as he takes a stride back, loosen the rein, so he knows that’s enough.…

WELL, this really is it after more than 40 years in eventing. THE summer season marches on relentlessly towards the inevitable start of hunting. Masters and hunt staff yearn for the consistency of the hunting week as the torrent of puppy shows, hound shows, parades and events draw to a close. Last season was without doubt the most challenging for hunts nationwide. Increased attention from saboteurs employing an increasing array of tactics, pushing criminal and civil law to the limits, made it tough for some hunts to operate. But not one hunt has recoiled — quite the opposite. The prominence of these extremists is largely due to the neutering of the League Against Cruel Sports and RSPCA. I THINK I have a love-hate relationship with riding at Goodwood. I love it because it’s a local track of mine — I grew up in West Sussex and was going there from a young age — but it can be a very frustrating place at times. Members of the House of Representatives voted 333 to 96 in favour of the US senator Joseph D Tydings memorial Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act. The bill is named after the late Maryland senator who saw the 1970 Horse Protection Act, which the PAST Act would amend, through Congress. Its aim is to end the practice of injuring the hooves and legs of Tennessee Walking Horses to produce the high-stepping “big lick” gait. Ryan was a larger than life character whose endless enthusiasm for the breed was infectious. His parents, Emrys and Sue, founded their Bychan Arabians stud outside Llandeilo in the 1960s. There, Ryan, his brother Rhodri and sister Rhiannon learned everything they needed to know about Arab horses, which were to become their raison d’etre. WE always thoroughly enjoy the county show circuit. However, this year we have seen some bizarre issues at different shows. Rather than name and shame individual shows, I’ve highlighted issues below. I would hope that the Showing Council could discuss these and others with the societies and the Association of Show and Agricultural Organisations to find a solution that benefits all: 1. At one fixture, we went to the collecting ring to work in, as there was no designated working-in area. When we got there we were asked not to trot as it was “a collecting ring and not a working-in area”.
