‘This will be a valuable resource’VET TIM MAIR SCIENTISTS who have spent years combining research papers to bring identified risk factors for colic together in one study say they hope it will save horses’ lives. A University of Nottingham team spent years collating, investigating and evaluating colic studies with the aim of identifying a single list of risk factors. The study, published in journal Plos One, groups factors associated with higher colic risk in areas relating to management, environment and the horse itself. KIDS’ TV A report on whether TV makes children prejudiced criticised My Little Pony characters for showing “stereotyped femininity”, and said the show stereotypes working classes by giving goats regional accents and portraying them as unintelligent. Good point; no one wants a goatist child, after all. CRIMINALS The Most Inept Thievery award goes to they who swiped a £50,000 BHS horsebox, then left it on an industrial estate nearby. WHAT a timely article “Judges urged to ‘take back control’ and save horses’ lives” (news, 18 July) is. Having worked as a steward at several shows this season, I would say 90% of animals forward are overweight and at least 50% are dangerously obese. I remember the show animals of the 1950s and ’60s, when they were displayed in working condition. However, many of today’s judges, owners and riders will never have seen fit show horses winning — to their eye, the present gross animals are correct. It is difficult to blame professional producers when overweight animals continue to be in the ribbons, as they have to look for winners to keep their clients happy. The answer has to be with the various societies, who must ensure all their listed…

IRELAND’S Mikey Pender secured himself a place in the history books last month as the youngest winner of the Hickstead Derby — aged just 19. Mikey and I meet at Hughes Horse Stud (HHS) in Kilkenny, where he has been based since he was 16. HHS is run by Olympic showjumper and respected breeder Marion Hughes, alongside international rider, producer and trainer Miguel Bravo. It’s a scorching summer day and the horses are sleepy, but the positivity in the immaculate yard is tangible. As I’m led into the elegant house, the smell of home cooking is in the air as Marion prepares the daily team lunch, which will be served around a dining table already noisy with the day’s horse chat. Avoid throwing your weight to the inside or asking for too much inside bend. This will only make the horse fall in that direction and then have no choice but to rebalance and land on the opposite lead. Repeating this exercise over time will help strengthen the horse and encourage him to respond to subtle, clear aids from the rider. If, despite correct training, your horse still refuses to land on the correct leg, it might be worth getting him checked over to ensure he isn’t in any physical distress, which may be affecting his ability to land on the correct lead. An added benefit of this exercise is that it helps to establish counter-canter and therefore straightness, as well as the balance of the rider.…

HEARTBREAKINGLY, one of Adrian Hoskins’ Suffolk mares lost her foal when heavily pregnant last year, due to a twisted umbilical cord — and this year the same thing happened to the same mare. The Suffolk Horse Society, which is doing its best to preserve the breed, carried out the necropsy. “She is a big, roomy mare and the vet said there’s too much room in there for the foal to move around and it twisted the cord,” says Adrian. Adrian is now using the breed advisory scheme, Sparks — which lists all the mares and stallions in a certain breed and tells you which mares should be bred from using a traffic-light system; green means breed from it, amber means be cautious, red means breeding is inadvisable. “It’s a really…

I HEAR job applicants in China are now often “interviewed” by robots. So if, say, 200 apply, the robots whittle them down to a shortlist of six, who then have second interviews by humans. How long before dressage is judged by robots? And would it be such a bad thing? After all, technology is already making judgements in sports like football and tennis. Recently, an eventing pupil of mine had a 16% difference of opinion in their dressage score. Then I had an 11% discrepancy from European-based international judges at a Premier League show. I care not if I was accused of hastening Brexit by making my views known, because a 68%, a 67% and a 57% means — in simple terms — really quite good, quite good and hopeless.…

HAVING suffered a tyre blowout in their horsebox three hours away from the Royal Highland Showground, and with recovery unable to attend for an estimated five hours, Team Jinks thought their five horses might miss their classes. However, the camaraderie of showing world shone through to get the horses to the show in time. “Sarah Challinor and Rebecca Penny weren’t far away and very kindly stopped to collect two ponies, all the kit, four jockeys and me,” explained Adam Forster. “Rachel Helliwell sent out a two-stall horsebox and a lady randomly stopped in the services and collected another horse. QUESTIONS have been asked over the Tokyo qualification process after the Ukraine earned its jumping ticket on 41 faults. The Ukrainians took the single Olympic place at the group C qualifier in Budapest on 28 June. And while 41 faults were enough for the Ukraine, 2012 champions Britain, European champions Ireland and current Olympic champions France are among those still fighting to qualify. FOUR new trustees have been elected to the British Horse Society (BHS) board. A total of 2,373 of the BHS’ 108,000 members voted (2.2%). Aberdeen Riding Club director and coach Sally McCarthy, Berkshire Riding Centre proprietor and marketing and legislation specialist Tim Lord and solicitor and grassroots BHS member Fran Mason join the board as general trustees. Sarah Simpson, a BHS chief assessor for more than 30 years, joins as the elected specialist trustee for education. Mr Lord has also been elected as interim chairman by trustees as David Sheerin reaches the end of his maximum six-year term. A vice-chairman will be chosen at a board meeting in September. THE Volkswagen Passat Alltrack (pictured) is a brilliant car. It’s good to drive, handles well, is loaded with safety gadgets and will tow up to 2.2 tonnes. It costs £37,000, but a new model is on the way, which should mean that dealers want to shift their current stock. Power comes from a two-litre turbocharged diesel engine. Without the trailer attached, you can expect more than 50mpg and a 0-60mph time of eight seconds. All-wheel drive comes as standard, so you won’t have any problems scrambling across a wet field. WHAT is it exactly that makes natives such good competition ponies? Former racehorse trainer and Connemara breeder Henrietta Knight believes it comes down to a number of traits. “Much of it is down to their temperament and toughness — they’ve all had to work hard for their existence,” she says. “They are quick-thinking because they are designed to have brilliant self-preservation, and are tough and trainable. It’s no coincidence that a lot of top riders learnt to ride on them.” Native ponies are also notorious for having that priceless “fifth leg”. “Their sure-footedness and ability to adapt to different terrain is a huge quality,” says Henrietta. “They are creatures of the land and the countryside they were bred for, meaning they are well adapted to a variety of terrain.” Their…

ON the Rare Breeds Survival Trust’s (RBST) equine watchlist, both the Dales and the Suffolk are marked “critical”, meaning fewer than 300 registered breeding mares remain. The Exmoor is listed as “endangered”, with between 300 and 500 breeding mares. Its close cousin, the Dartmoor — though it should be noted that it is a very different breed — is also endangered. The Cleveland Bay, Eriskay and Hackney (horse and pony) are critical. The Clydesdale, Fell and Highland are marked as vulnerable. The Shire is “at risk” with between 900 and 1,500 and the New Forest is “minority”, with between 1,500 and 3,000. For perspective, in 2014 it was estimated there were 1,864 giant pandas (in total) in the wild, an increase from around 1,000 in the 1970s.…

CHIO Aachen, Germany MUCH has been made of the fact that Charlotte Dujardin’s last appearance at CHIO Aachen was not a happy one. On that occasion, in 2014, she and Valegro finished sixth in the grand prix, the only time they were beaten in this test since before London 2012. BRITISH SHOWJUMPING (BS) CEO Iain Graham has taken over as British Equestrian Federation (BEF) chief executive after Nick Fellows stood down. It was announced on 18 July that Mr Fellows was leaving, less than 16 months after he joined, to “explore other opportunities”. BEF chairman Mohamed Elsarky said: “On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Nick for the work he has undertaken and I wish him well for the future.” Mr Fellows took on the role in March 2018. I’VE managed to avoid “crossing the pond” to the US for most of June and July, which has allowed me to spend more time at home and on the domestic scene. I enjoyed Alec Lochore’s “rejigged” Barbury and the changes he made to the cross-country course after my 12-year tenure. The standard on every course was completely normal, so I was amazed at the amount of trouble it caused and even more surprised by the number of withdrawals. You won’t find better footing during high summer anywhere and he had added arena surface on the drop landings. ON my first judging trip to South Africa, I was made aware of an old African proverb which struck a chord with me: not to know is bad; not to wish to know is worse. And just to prove that you’re never too old to learn, I took the opportunity of returning to school last month by visiting the impressive, state-of-the-art HQ of Daniel Thwaites for a lesson on the Shire breed.
