RIDERS have been urged to be vigilant after a spate of positive tests for banned substance synephrine. Already 10 horses have tested positive for the stimulant this year, most in South America. The FEI said investigations are ongoing but it wanted to warn stakeholders about the substance. Synephrine is classified as a specified substance by the FEI, which acknowledges the risk of its accidentally entering a horse’s system as contamination through environmental sources. It is found in plants including teff hay, the common rush and the leaves of citrus trees. The FEI said it can also be present in some herbal and nutritional supplements, and is often found in the peel extract of Seville oranges, used as a flavouring. “The FEI urges stakeholders to be vigilant of possible sources and…

Irish eventer Aoife Clark came third in the OI at Tweseldown on 20 May, just over two weeks after her first child Patrick was born. Aoife said she felt fine and enjoyed the ride. IT goes without saying that during the height of spring we undoubtedly witness an increase of ill-mannered stallions and colts. This isn’t just apparent in ridden classes, but it also applies to many in-hand exhibits. While I appreciate we are slap-bang in the middle of the covering season and testosterone levels are sky-high, I don’t believe we should be making any exceptions for these “boys”. I’ve seen too many cavorting in line, fully drawn, climbing all over handlers and making a general nuisance of themselves. Not only does it upset other animals standing in close proximity, but it’s also a potentially dangerous situation and those misbehaving should be penalised accordingly — or even dismissed if they are creating a situation that could put others at risk. OWNERS have been urged to continue to be vigilant for equine flu as cases are still being diagnosed across the country. As H&H went to press on 27 May, 13 cases had been confirmed in May, including nine in one week, following 12 in April. Two of the 13 horses were vaccinated, while the vaccination status of two more is unknown, and the rest had not been vaccinated. In eight cases, the horses involved had recently been imported from Ireland, while one had recently been transported from Europe. IT is “essential” British Eventing (BE) finds a replacement for Belton, the interim chief executive has stressed, as the application process is under way. Jude Matthews said the early-season international classes are a “hugely important stepping stone” for many, and since Belton’s organisers were told by landowners the National Trust the event could not continue there (news, 2 May), efforts have been made to find a new home. BE emailed all organisers asking them to express an interest in applying for the fixture, then sent application packs to those who responded. THERE are many routes to the final destination in dressage and understanding judges is part of the journey. Having consistently been scoring 66-68%, I was gutted to receive a “personal worst” recently. I don’t mind a low score if deserved, and confess to knowing little about judge training, but some effort should be made towards more consistency. A six needs to be a six today, tomorrow and the week after for the same way of going. From the competitive point of view, it is akin to your son or daughter going to school and learning that 2+2=4. Since then, he has worked at British Equestrian Promotions and chaired every committee in the sport. His contribution to eventing has been unequalled and outstanding over the past 40 years. Shows are deemed more “exhibitor friendly’’ when giving competitors more bites of the apple, and if they can enter more than one show pony class, for example, ideally it should be under different judges. A HORSE who spent last summer turned out in a Norfolk town is returning to his patch thanks to residents raising £15,000 to buy him. The Lifeboat Horse sculpture stood in the harbour of Wells last year as part of the 2018 Wells Heritage Art Trail. Artist Rachael Long created it from metal bars, inspired by a photograph of the heavy horses who once pulled the Wells lifeboat on to the beach. The horse, who is entirely visible only at low tide, proved so popular with the town that the community raised the £15,000 needed to buy him, and he returned this month. He will remain in place until the autumn, then be “stabled” over the winter and return in the spring.…

A variety of work will help a horse’s mental wellbeing. I’m a big believer of “field therapy” — horses need their own space to run and feel no pressure, so often I will turn out a sharp horse overnight. Over-schooling a horse in a manège environment can be detrimental. It’s good to give a sharp horse a blowout in a field or on the gallops to get the silliness out of him before schooling. You’re not going to get that instant, calm responsiveness from drilling in the arena. If you only have an arena, send him on for a few laps before asking him to collect. Know the difference between an unbalanced horse and an anxious one. Unbalanced horses often lack the strength to do what is asked. You will…
