Talking to riders and connections at this year’s show, some said it was not competing here that meant the world, but rather qualifying to do so. SHORTENING the grand prix dressage test at Olympia and setting it to music are among changes aimed at broadening the discipline’s appeal and further engaging the audience. The test at this year’s show (17 to 23 December) will be shortened by 45 seconds to five minutes. Music will also be selected for each competitor, to “reflect each combination’s personality”. As part of the two-year pilot project, riders will stay in the arena after their tests to see their scores, and give feedback, while the audience will again be able to use an app to compare their scoring of each test to the judges’. EQUESTRIAN businesses could find themselves in hot water with the taxman if lines between hobby and work become blurred, a legal specialist has warned. Carrie de Silva, principal lecturer in law and taxation at Harper Adams University, raised the topic at a University of Buckingham symposium on horses in culture, society and law on 19 September. Ms de Silva explained the distinction between “business” and “hobby” is not always as simple as it sounds. “If it’s a hobby, you pay for it,” she said. “If it’s a business, profit is taxed, but you can offset losses.” She said this is more complex than having a business plan or not, and that HMRC will look at “badges of trade”, which cover, for example, assets and profit, and take into consideration the…

PETER ROBESON THE legendary showjumper, who won two Olympic medals and rode for Britain more than 80 times, died peacefully at home aged 88, on 29 September. Mr Robeson rode at his first Olympics in Stockholm in 1956, where he won team bronze aboard Pat Smythe’s Scorchin. Eight years later, he took individual bronze at the 1964 Games with Firecrest, then represented Britain at the 1976 Olympics with Law Court. During his showjumping career, which spanned more than 40 years, he won numerous grand prix titles and the King George V Gold Cup at the 1967 Royal International Horse Show. IT isn’t often a Shetland pony sees off tough competition from fish, reptiles, cats and dogs to take a national title — but Crème Brulee has done just that. The flaxen-maned 17-year-old gelding from Surrey beat contenders including Hedwig the rabbit and Bakana the bearded dragon to be voted the 2018 face of Amazon Pets. As winner of the equine category, thanks to the public’s support on social media, Crème Brulee went with the winners of the other six groups before a panel of judges, who deemed his the face they wanted to represent the brand. Cue lots of puns about the pony being the “mane attraction” and “trotting off with the prize”, while the photographer praised his modelling ability and said he was “far from a one-trick pony”. ‘I think it’s a cop-out to say it’s tough for women’ When I started at the Royal Agricultural College, I noticed we were all wearing the same thing. A 12-year-old gelding referred to the dentistry clinic had bad breath and a history of quidding. An examination of his mouth revealed a midline fracture of tooth 209, which is located in the upper mid-cheek region. Food was packing deep into the centre of the tooth and fracture fragments were displaced to the inside and outside — with the outside fragment rubbing on the horse’s inner cheek and causing a large ulcer. Following X-rays to rule out disease of the overlying sinuses, the tooth was removed via oral extraction. The extent of the fracture through both infundibula can be clearly seen. Examination of tooth 109, on the opposite jaw, showed a deep infundibular caries lesion. This was classed grade two, affecting the cementum and enamel of one infundibulum — an…

NATIVE RIVER RACING THE Colin Tizzard-trained National Hunt hero captured the hearts of racing fans back in 2016 when winning the Hennessy Gold Cup followed by the Coral Welsh Grand National. Following an 11-month absence, the eight-year-old made a full recovery from a minor injury to restamp his authority across the National Hunt turf in 2018. He made a triumphant comeback at Newbury in February this year when winning the Grade Two Betfair Denman Chase. A good horse can often become a victim to its own success, so after the Royal International we gave “Sean” a holiday and built him back up on the roads, which has done him the world of good. TOP British showjumper Tim Stockdale is taking a break from the saddle after revealing he has stomach cancer. The 54-year-old Olympic rider was diagnosed on 1 October and told H&H he is “feeling ok”. Always put your leg on over the pole before the fence, because this trains your horse to put effort into take-off without rushing. The most important thing when doing any exercise is to stay relaxed. Horses will make mistakes, so try not to get annoyed, just keep repeating it until they understand what you’re asking them. GRASSROOTS event riders with dreams of competing at Burghley will have the chance to do so from 2020 thanks to a new initiative. For an initial three-year term, the prestigious venue will host the British Eventing (BE) BE80(T) championship, during the week of the CCI4* horse trials, and featuring a new cross-country course designed for the competition. BE chief executive David Holmes said: “This is a hugely important development for our members and the sport. OWNERS are being urged to act now over fears of an increased risk of atypical myopathy. The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) said conditions including bare pastures and windy weather have created a “perfect storm”. The cause of the disease is the toxin hypoglyxin A, which is found in the sycamore tree. The tree’s helicopter-shaped fruit can distribute the seeds up to 4km. BEVA member Adam Redpath said: “Horses do not typically choose to eat sycamore seeds, however when pastures are bare, there is a greater tendency for them to be ingested.” Owners should identity trees in grazing fields, as well as in close proximity, and collect seeds or exclude horses from these areas. IN the weeks leading up to Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), amateurs and professionals alike found themselves on the unique treadmill this show generates. We were so focused on the intensive preparation — constantly checking coats, weight and way of going — the whole process seemed relentless. As the dates drew closer, the work only intensified with all the last-minute preparations. Yet when the show itself is actually upon you, it seems to pass in a whirlwind, featuring a rollercoaster of highs and lows of emotion and a distinct lack of sleep. AFTER 70 years, it’s great that the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) is still going strong and we all get the chance to ride in that amazing atmosphere. This year was the first time I jumped in the international classes, and while it’s a three-star, the environment, organisation and the number of spectators make it more like a five-star in many ways. The national classes are something we all try to qualify for when we are younger, and the international has always attracted a great standard of riders even when other shows are on. DRIVING to a meet with the Duke of Buccleuch’s from the border, just east of Kelso, takes you through a great sweep of their country. The large, flat arable fields around Kelso segue into the verdant Tweed Valley before opening out into undulating hill ground near Selkirk. Beyond that is heather as far as the eye can see, stretching out westwards to Dumfriesshire. There are only a few roads and railways. For anyone brought up further south, the range and size of Buccleuch country is jaw-dropping. The meet is in the hilly ground west of Selkirk and a good gathering of footies are there at 6.30am. THIS has been an extraordinary season, with the spate of cancellations followed by the prolonged drought. But, at the cost of a lot of effort by event teams, it has worked — and worked triumphantly. Once people realised the dry weather was here to stay, ground teams started work early and many produced better going than in normal years. To crown 2018 with double gold at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) was a wonderful achievement for Britain.
