Sir — I was lucky enough to watch the showjumping at the Global Champions Tour held in London on Saturday. It was wonderful — the setting as stunning as the London Olympics in 2012. I arrived at Sloane Square and could see nothing to promote the event until I was pretty much outside. You would not have been aware that there was such a prestigious show taking place, or that London was awash with the most amazing horses. ‘RED-HOT CHILLI TO COOL AS A CUCUMBER’ SALLY HARDWICK has done the hard work schooling the seven-year-old novice gold winner, Glasgow, while her daughter, Alex, scooped the prizes. Cabin EC, Aberdeenshire Joanna won a medium on her warm-up outing, before taking the medium silver regional championship with Romeo Xx. “He hasn’t been out for a month so I thought I’d take him for a practice outing and he completed his winter medium regional qualification,” said Joanna, who is looking forward to her first visit to the national championships. “I came over from Australia and groomed at the 1997 national championships and decided I’d love to compete there.” The Solaris Amoureux nine-year-old was purchased three years ago with Joanna bringing him on from novice level. “He also qualified for the elementary but is now very established at medium. IT’S a narrow field of eligibility, but I urge those who can to vote for the FEI Dressage Committee rider representative and to do it well in advance of the 23 September deadline. Voting is only open to riders over 18 who have competed at one of the last two senior FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), Olympics or Paralympics. I share the candidates’ view that the voting criteria could have been more inclusive. What about those who have ridden at European Championships? TIGHT nosebands have been hitting headlines again as a rider was “caught out” by protocol — which the FEI is reviewing. British team member Charlotte Dicker was given a yellow card by the FEI ground jury for “abuse of horse” at the junior and young rider European Championships in Fontainebleau in July. Her ride Sabatini’s noseband was deemed too tight at the tack inspection after her individual test, but Charlotte said she had ridden in the same padded noseband, done up on the same hole, the previous day, and at “all her competitions this season”. “I’d never had a comment from a steward,” she said. “Sabatini is my world and I would never do anything to compromise her welfare or cause her discomfort. RIDERS have been warned of the risks “toxic” plastic waste as arena surfaces could pose to themselves, horses and the environment. The Environment Agency (EA) warned that those found with the substance on their land could face an expensive bill for removal, and could be liable for prosecution. The substance is plastic granulate, made from recycled cable sheathing and waste electronic equipment. “It’s being marketed by some waste producers and brokers as a base material for manèges and track surfaces. But there is no legal route for its use for this purpose,” said a statement released by the EA. “This granulate is being sold as a cheap replacement for clean plastic granules derived as a byproduct from plastic manufacture or granules specifically produced for manèges.” Certain waste materials, such as…

TRAINING PATH’S UNCERTAIN FUTURE TRAINERS who hold UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) qualifications have been urged not to panic over the pathway’s uncertain future. The British Equestrian Federation has confirmed that any UKCC-endorsed qualifications will remain “valid and recognised” in both the UK and abroad through the International Group for Equestrian Qualifications passport. A recent review, commissioned by Sport England, revealed that the UKCC could change after September 2020. “Our coach education pathway and the levels (Level 1-4) we have in place will remain and continue to be vital to equestrian sport,” said a BEF spokesman. ‘People need to say goodbye and grieve in their own way’ I always wanted to work with horses, but this wasn’t what I had in mind. My dad, Ronnie, operated an abattoir here. IT’S thanks to some juggling that OI under-21 runner-up Isabella MacKenzie manages to train and compete. The biology and psychology Newcastle University student has just completed her first year, and credits mother Lucy for looking after the eight-year-old mare Omard Ala at home. “I’ll meet Mum at competitions or at horsescotland performance squad training sessions. THE Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) has relaxed restrictions on sales of a “vital” equestrian painkiller. The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) had been “perplexed” by the VMD suspending sales of all injectable forms of flunixin on 26 July, without consulting the profession. But the VMD has now allowed stock to be released from manufacturers, and said it will let vets know when the drug, the most common painkiller for horses in surgery and those with colic, is available to order. “It remains a concern to BEVA that this mechanism was not put in place before the suspension was imposed,” said association president Jon Pycock. “Contrary to assertions by the VMD, wholesalers were unable to meet the demands of the veterinary profession and clinical use of this medicine was disrupted within…

NELL has many strengths: she runs her own company, speaks three languages and has four beautiful, well-behaved children. Some riders try to avoid the issue by cutting out part of the ring. Don’t be tempted to do this — it looks unprofessional to judges. Riders are understandably nervous competing at bigger competitions so leave yourself plenty of time. Hack the horse around the show ground before your class and stand quietly by the ring to allow him to soak up the atmosphere without any stress. There are plenty of calmers on the market, which can be used on an anxious horse. I have found some to be very useful. Turning a horse out in the field the night or day before can help reduce any excess energy at the show, as can lungeing if your horse is particularly energetic.…

WE received the good news last week that the World Equestrian Games (WEG) cross-country course will be full length, after some doubts due to ground preparation problems (news, 2 August). The organisers have faced challenging conditions, but had the course been significantly shortened and we’d ended up holding a World Championship on a sub-standard track, it would have been totally inappropriate, given there are plenty of other suitable events in the world. It would be like marathon runners being told to compete over a half marathon for their World Championships. THE British aim for Nations Cups this season was to give partnerships a chance to develop, with the World Equestrian Games (WEG) and qualification for the 2020 Olympics our primary target. If someone had asked at the beginning if I’d be happy with sixth in the league, I’d have said yes as the goal was to stay in division one. Qualification for the Barcelona final is a bonus. WEG remains the priority over Barcelona in terms of selection and we will announce the championship team soon. We’re in a period of developing partnerships and horsepower. I’ve been involved with Garstang for about 20 years, working alongside Ros Hargreaves, who I also helped with the British Show Horse Association Northern Spring Show for 17 years. Garstang is a lovely, old-fashioned agricultural show and we’ve been fortunate in adding seven HOYS qualifiers to the light horse section.
