OVER the past few years, television producers have asked me for suggestions of riders they could screen test with a view to them appearing in programmes about a particular equestrian sport. Showjumping has the greatest resonance for the non-equestrian audience. The Daily Mail will blithely describe Zara Phillips as a “showjumper”. The man on the street can talk to you about Harvey Smith’s V — for victory, or otherwise — sign at Hickstead. WHO says fancy dress is just for kids? Not Meon Riding Club, celebrating its 50th anniversary. To mark the milestone, the club held an open show on 4 August. And the stars of the show, or at least the fancy dress, were Beth Richards, Rathnaleen Retro and Pippa Griffin, aka a rider, a road and a cone. After the scorching show day, Pippa, who had first-aiders on standby as she gulped water in her cone, told H&H it had been “great fun”. “Retro can be tense and spooky, and I thought, ‘How on earth are we going to do this?!’” Pippa said. “But he was so good.” Thanks to intensive training, Retro batted not an eyelid as he was transformed into a road. “It was such good fun,” Pippa said.…

Sir — Having read with interest the feature on Britain’s native trends (26 July), I was disappointed to hear some contributors bigging up natives by running down show ponies. Pony breeding, showing and breed development in the UK is going through a tough time as we compete with other leisure activities. We should recognise we are up against skiing, cycling, hill walking and even Love Island, and not with other equine enthusiasts. This isn’t a competition to be won by one breed at the expense of another; it is a challenge that the equine collective either succeeds at, or fails at, together. IDEALLY, a foal will spend his early weeks by his mother’s side, feeding on the mare’s milk as and when he chooses. Sometimes, however, the mare does not survive the foaling or dies soon after. Alternatively, a foal may be too sick to nurse, or his dam may reject him — most commonly seen with maiden (first-time) mares. A maiden mare may also fail to produce sufficient milk, although veterinary treatment might resolve this. The decision to hand-rear a foal must not be taken lightly and should only be considered by experienced breeders. It may be necessary, however, if a foster mare cannot be found. The 12-year-old gelding has been in great form of late, starting with a win in the novice silver at the recent summer regionals. Putting 2017 behind her, she won the gold sections of both novice classes at Yorkshire Dressage on Iggy, a St Malo five-year-old she found on Facebook. “I saw this post from a friend of a friend saying she would have to part with her home-bred because she was poorly, so I messaged her. PONY CLUB members who represented the UK in tetrathlon at Tryon International Equestrian Center came back home with medals galore. HORSE DEATHS: DRIVER IN COURT A WOMAN has appeared in court in relation to a 2017 road collision in which two horses were fatally injured. Karen Higgins, of Orchard Close, Normandy, Surrey, was charged with driving without due care and attention over the incident, last November. Both horses had to be put down at the scene in Christmas Pie Avenue, Normandy. One rider, a teenage girl, sustained minor injuries while the other, an adult, was more badly hurt. Ms Higgins, 36, appeared at Guildford Magistrates’ Court on 27 July. She pleaded not guilty, and will appear at Staines Magistrates’ Court on 15 October. WHEN Jackie Cornwell’s broodmare Calamity broke a leg in the field and had to be destroyed, her 10-day-old foal needed round-the-clock care. Jackie and her daughter Sophie set about hand-rearing the cream-coloured filly, who was nicknamed Orphan Annie. “Annie was a strong and very forward foal and took quickly to drinking from a bucket,” says Jackie, who fed her with milk replacer every few hours, day and night. “Everyone said she would be a nightmare if she was hand-reared, but we turned her out with a little Welsh section A gelding who was only four. Cadland Autumn Promise, a seven-year-old bay gelding, had been contesting a BE80(T) the previous week with rider Samantha Bebbington. The son of Warren Play-Away has been with the family since he was six months old. Samantha, who works as a sales assistant in Marks & Spencer, used to ride his half brother Rushmoor Sunrise in M&M working hunter pony classes. “We did jump Autumn Promise here, but he had a pole. I was let down by a potential owner for Feel Glorious, so I named her “By Default” for about two weeks. Scott and the nine-year-old Hello Mr President were first to go in a seven-combination jump-off under a blistering sun at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on Saturday (4 August). THE vet accused of passing insider information to his brother about the injury that ruled defending champion Faugheen out the 2016 Champion Hurdle has been exonerated. Timothy Brennan was cleared of committing a corrupt or fraudulent practice by the British Horseracing Authority’s (BHA) disciplinary panel on 17 July. On 2 August, the BHA released the panel’s full written reasons. Among these is a recommendation that the BHA reviews the wording of the rule that dictates who falls within the organisation’s jurisdiction, as it could be left open to interpretation as it stands. VETS who tested a method of assessing performance say they will now change their procedures for pre-purchase and lameness examinations. The 10 equine vets used an ethogram showing 24 behaviours ridden horses may exhibit if they are in pain, developed by Sue Dyson of the Animal Health Trust. The study involved 20 horse and rider combinations. The horses were assessed by a physio and a saddle-fitter, then worked in front of the vets. The sessions were filmed so Dr Dyson could compare her assessments, and so the riders’ skill could also be scored. WAR ON WORMS RESISTANCE to chemical wormers is a growing concern. Rather than worming every horse every few weeks, current best practice is to monitor worm egg counts in faeces and treat the horse accordingly. The life cycle of the worms includes a stage in which the larvae develop in dung piles on pasture, before spreading out to contaminate the grass itself. When the horse eats the infected grass, he swallows infective larvae and the worms develop inside him. Scientists have discovered that a fungus called Duddingtonia flagrans forms a mesh inside dung piles that traps and kills infective larvae after they have been passed by the horse in the droppings. Fungi are spread by spores, not seeds, and the spores of this Duddingtonia fungus are harmless if they are…

THE London leg of the Tour is a super show and has found a perfect setting at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The showjumping was superb and what a great boost it was for the sport in this country — we had five British winners across the five- and two-star classes and, of course, the grand prix really was an exceptionally good class. Interestingly, Scott only qualified by the skin of his teeth, but he came out and proved unbeatable as first to go in the jump-off. Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing, Gatcombe, Glos WITH a new championship for retrained racehorses added to its programme this year, Gatcombe’s Festival of British Eventing produced three intense days of action. Organisers had courted top riders with encouraging ground reports, knowing they might be reluctant to push horses over these undulating championship tracks on parched ground — reigning British open champion Gemma Tattersall, for one, did not defend her title with Arctic Soul. For Gatcombe is all about galloping to meet always-elusive optimum times; a horse with a raking stride may shoot up the leaderboard, but no one wins prize money here with the handbrake on. I’VE just returned from coaching at the young rider European Championships in Fontainebleau, and was proud of my pupil Anna Jesty’s 70% score in the team test. The show had a real championship feel with several disciplines there at once and the team spirit was excellent. The British dressage team coach, Paul Fielder, was superb, giving the riders confidence to ride for big marks, and several of them went over 70%. Britain should work hard to keep Paul. The cohesive team atmosphere bodes well for the future, and hopefully there will be more training opportunities available over the winter for the combinations going forward next year. The international youth events can now span a 13-year period, with FEI children’s classes starting from age 12, on ponies, and finishing at 25.…

THIS year’s Royal International (RIHS) will be remembered for — among other things — extreme weather, which went from baking to a British weather reality check in the form of a day-long downpour. Hats off to the organisers, who had done a fantastic job of watering all the rings to keep them in the best possible condition. With more than 10 million litres of water spread before the event and every ring being watered every night during it, I would not have wanted Hickstead’s water bill.
