A HAND-HELD device that gives a quick and accurate concussion diagnosis could be ready in as little as two years, if testing proves successful. The University of Birmingham’s college of medical and dental sciences has spent nine years carrying out research that has led to the development of a test for concussion using saliva and urine. Equestrians are at particular risk of concussion and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and British Eventing (BE) have protocols in place should a rider sustain a suspected head injury. Being able to diagnose cases of concussion immediately and accurately after a fall could be game-changing for equestrian sport by allowing uninjured riders to continue, while those with a confirmed injury could take appropriate action promptly. A STUDY has revealed that a blood test can give an indication of a horse’s chances of surviving atypical myopathy. The often-fatal illness is usually found in grazing horses and is linked to the seeds of the sycamore tree. Signs of atypical myopathy include muscular weakness and stiffness, dark urine, fatigue, colic-like signs, shivering and sweating. University of Liège researchers used blood samples collected from cases of atypical myopathy between autumn 2006 and spring 2015. They found that a horse’s chance of survival could be estimated from levels of three acylcarnitines (metabolic byproducts) in the blood. The team said this information could be used to prevent the “unnecessary suffering of animals that are unlikely to survive” and be used to “focus support on those that have a favourable prognosis”. “The…

A NEW organisation for equestrian employers has been launched after a study revealed that more than half of grooms are paid below the minimum wage. The Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) has been set up by the British Grooms Association (BGA) to offer advice and support to all those who employ staff in the horse world. The EEA offers a range of support for employers, including information about pensions and payrolls, legal advice and a contract creator. “We work to educate employers about their obligations and also inform employees of their legal rights,” said Lucy Katan, executive director of the BGA and EEA. “Recent high-profile prosecutions for non-compliance [among employers] have increased the awareness of the issue across the industry, but there is a long way to ensure employers understand their…

CLONING has been around for decades. It has been the elephant in the room for some while, as it is practised quietly by some big breeders and advocates for the horse sport worldwide, but is never really spoken about. The thoroughbred industry practises only live breeding so cloning will never reach racing. But in showjumping and dressage, it could be very useful for the future of our sport, potentially providing a boost in breeding. Cloning known stallions that produce good horses could benefit many. It has become very expensive to buy top-quality young horses because there is a lack thereof, and cloning good mares could give breeders the upper hand by taking some of the guesswork out. HEAD injuries in riders can occur due to a blow to the head, such as hitting it on a solid object in a fall. Or they can occur as a result of rapid deceleration, where the brain moves inside the skull. It is important riders are not allowed to return to the saddle before they have fully recovered as repeat injuries can lead to further health problems. AS the debate about the future of four-star events — and Olympic and World Championship status — continues, Burghley feels like the real deal. I HAVE been called many things but never a pathfinder, until the British Show Pony Society (BSPS) championships three weeks ago when I was given the task of experimenting with a new method of assessing the conformation sections of the Blue Riband final for mini show ponies. This was introduced with the best of intentions to raise the profile of in-hand presentation and make children, particularly in the first ridden class, more aware of the importance of this phase. And of course, manners in-hand were tested on another level. Both divisions were judged as a conventional in-hand class, with ponies walking around the ring together and trotting past the judge individually prior to being lined up. IRELAND’S Ballydoyle Racing Stables has challenged a Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) notice to comply with employment legislation. A compliance notice was issued after WRC inspectors detected an alleged breach of the Working Time Act in relation to excessive working hours for stable staff based at Ballydoyle. During the Labour Court hearing in Dublin last month (28-29 August), barrister Rosemary Healy Rae said inspectors discovered several employees had worked 19 hours during a 24-hour period at the Co. Tipperary yard and were not given the stipulated compensatory rest periods. It was alleged some employees had worked 28 consecutive days without a day off. ‘Lateral work is something people can do out hacking as well as in the arena’ AIM LATERAL work is great for improving the horse’s suppleness and straightness. Every horse is more supple one way than the other by nature, so we use lateral work to even them up on both reins. As soon as my young horses have learnt the basic aids, we start to introduce leg-yielding, so they learn to accept the leg and move sideways off it. We then build them up into grand prix horses who can do steep half-passes. Shoulder-in is a good strengthening exercise because the horse has to step the hindleg under the line of their body and take more weight behind. DO we need a dressage ombudsman? Well, yes, according to the stream of phone calls and emails I’ve received from frustrated competitors. OK, consumers — which is what competitors are — like to complain. But what’s behind the current blame culture sweeping our sport? And who’s to handle it? To be fair to British Dressage (BD), they do investigate and respond to complaints. But, by then, the moment to qualify or achieve a win or a place has gone. The damage is done. So does the answer lie with better training and briefing of judges, stewards and show organisers?
