WICKED WINTER Frostbite in the trenches could make your toes drop off. In the winter of 1914-15, ‘anti-frostbite grease’ was sent to the soldiers in large tins. It was mostly made of pork fat! After 1915, the grease was made from whale oil, which smelt even worse. Before going out in cold and wet weather, soldiers were told they had to be stripped and rubbed down in the grease to keep them warm. Yuck!…
