Protect floors and surfaces and prepare your walls. Pull out nails or screws, fill any holes, scrape off peeling paint and sand down any bumps to create a smooth base. Seal any stains that show though and make sure the wall is clean. Cover the walls with an acrylic-based primer; this will help the lime wash adhere to the surface and prevent peeling and cracking. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, prepare the lime wash. Using a long-haired brush, apply the wash onto the wall using crisscross strokes, and keep a wet edge as you work. You will need • Bright pink and green A4 paper • Ruler • Craft knife • Cutting mat • Clear thread • Glue gun/strong glue • Scissors • Circle craft punch 1 Take a sheet of bright pink paper and score lines across, 1cm apart, using a ruler and the back of a craft knife. 2 Fold the paper back and forth, in an accordion style. Tie some clear thread around the middle of the paper to hold the folds in place. 3 Fold two halves out to create a fan, and glue in place. Leave to dry. Choose three colours – a lighter one for the top third, a medium shade for the middle and a darker one for the bottom. Four colours will give you an even more gradual blend. A good starting point is to pick a favourite shade and then choose the two or three adjacent shades on the colour swatch. Your aim is for the three colours to blend into one another rather than look like clear stripes. Try experimenting on lining paper first to get the technique right. We didn’t want it to be too bling and we thought the matt black taps would offset the brass details. Things don’t need to be perfect. Some of the edges on our panelling may not exactly align, but I realised that when it was filled and painted, no one could notice any slight imperfections. It’s okay to wait. We used most of our budget buying our home, so we had to save to do the bigger jobs, like the bathroom. This gave me time to hone my ideas rather than rushing into a design that might date. Don’t be afraid to use lots of pattern and colour in your home. I realised that you need to decorate for the here and now and not worry about future buyers liking your taste. It’s your house and the likelihood is if you love it, others will too. Try and be patient when you have to repair damaged walls. It pays to do any repairs properly first time around, so you don’t have to revisit the same problem after a few months. Don’t necessarily go for the cheapest tradesperson and pick someone who’s been personally recommended. If you’ve got an old house, just go with it. Embrace the lumpy walls, imperfections and quirkiness. I’m quite particular about paint as I’m an art teacher. When we first painted the kitchen walls, we had to repaint them two days later as it looked too blue.
