• There was already a perfectly usable dishwasher in the kitchen when we moved in, so we hung onto it. However, in hindsight, I wish I’d thought a bit more about keeping it. You will need * Glass dome * Dried flowers * Spray paint * Dry foam block * Craft knife * Hot glue gun * Scissors 1 In a well-ventilated room, cover your work surface and surrounding area with dust sheets. Lightly spray some of the dried flower stems in different spring colours, then leave to dry. 2 Remove the dome lid from the wooden base and set aside. Take the block of dry foam and carefully cut down to around 7-8cm wide with a craft knife. Stick the foam to the middle of the base with a hot glue gun. 3 Cut the dried flower stems down to different lengths with scissors. Make a washi tape wall Make sure you get it right with this sound advice • Whether you’re renting or just want to add interest to your walls, temporary tape is the perfect non-permanent solution. Just make sure your surface is suitable and that you do a test first. If a wall has been painted badly for example, it might cause problems when you come to remove the tape. Add a strip of the material in a place that is less noticeable and leave it on for a week. After a week has passed, take the tape off, noting how well it peels away and if it leaves marks. • Washi tape comes in hundreds of colours, so you can mix up the effect and be as creative as you…

You will need * Fabric, approx 60cm, depending on the size of the cushion pad * Fringe trim * Cotton lace trim * Cushion pad (ours was 40cm) * Paper * Sewing machine * Iron * Basic sewing supplies 1 Make a paper template the same size as the cushion pad, plus a 1cm seam allowance all the way around. How to tackle some basic DIY Be well prepared before tackling your home decorating to-do list • Make a professional wallpapered feature by hanging the central panel first and working outwards. This allows a perfectly centred pattern across the wall. Be sure to mark measurements in the middle of your wall and find the centre of the first panel of wallpaper, allowing a perfect centre line for your wallpaper hanging. • Preparing walls and ceilings for painting takes time but achieves neat paintwork. Walls must be clean, sanding down bumps and filling holes. A quality masking tape along wall boundaries, such as skirting boards and the ceiling, gets a clean finish on the wall edges. Here are some guidelines for getting the right product for your home • Choose from 100 per cent wool, wool mixes or synthetics, depending on where the carpet will be fitted in your home. Wool is warm and luxurious underfoot, but wool-nylon mixes and man-made fibres like polyester are more durable. How did it all begin? I was offered a single day’s work styling and presenting a room makeover for a BBC daytime television show and it snowballed into a full-time job very fast!
